in Cutting tax
Hello everyone,
I'm hoping that someone can help with this:
I started a new job this month and have just had my first wages payment and payslip and I think my Tax is wrong.
Total Gross Pay: 2077.00
Gross for Tax: 2077.00
Earnings for NI: 2077.00
Deductions:
PAYE Tax: 415.40
National insurance: 169.92
My tax code is 997L which I also had at my previous employer. But now I have looked into this I believe that it should be 1000L? Anyway, that £415.40 of tax is a lot more than I was expecting to pay.
I would be extremely grateful if someone could help shed some light on this
.
Regards,
Pinchy

can you look at your payslip again
you seem to have a BR taxcode and not a 997L taxcode0 -
Hi,
My payslip definitely states 997L as my tax code. I take it that this is wrong?0 -
Did you have two "pays" in the same month, i.e. a short period of your previous employer at the start and then a short period of your new employer at the end.
Could be that your previous employer already used that month's personal allowance for your final payslip with them, so that your new employer's pay had no personal allowance available.0 -
Hi Pennywise,
My final pay from my previous employer was in December. So that shouldn't be the case should it?0 -
Did you give new employer a P45 from your old job?0
-
Yes I did. but could it be that they haven't sent it off in time or something? As clapton suggested I have been taxed at 20% exactly with no tax free allowance. I think that maybe they have just gotten my code incorrect on my payslip and put it through as emergency tax?
Sorry for the silly questions. I wanted to arm myself before I went into my bosses office to question it.0 -
I wouldn't go into bosses office to question it.
I'd politely ask whoever runs the payroll if they are able to explain, and if they can't then the next step would be to call HMRC to get it sorted out.
In the meantime, as you have a copy of the P45 and know your earnings and tax paid to date, you could plug those figures into a PAYE calculator and see whether you are up to date for the year or not.
977L tax code means slightly reduced allowance. Were you getting any benefit in kind like a subscription, healthcare, uniform allowance or something?0 -

Best way to check for payments falling in the same tax month is to compare tax months on the P45 and your first payslip in new job. If they are the same then they have been paid in the same tax month.0 -
I didn't ever have any benefits of any kind at my previous employer. I occasionally had to use my own car where I was reimbursed at £0.45 per mile. I guess I had better ask some questions....0
