Before I get our lass pregnant il make her start smoking, that way we can cash in too. That's what will happen with this stupid idea, why should non smokers be effectively penalised for being pregnant?

Indeed, I'd be offering two options - stop smoking or have regular visits both pre and post birth from social services. If they can't do something so simple for their child then they clearly need outside help.

That will cost a lot more than £400 per baby.

Why should people who smoke get paid for giving up something they're supposed to give up?

You don't get rewarded in everyday life for things you're supposed to do. I haven't killed anybody in 22 years, where's my reward?

In an ideal world, they shouldn't but there is another person involved.

The money will ensure that the babies are healthier than they would be if their mothers kept smoking.

I was thinking of the welfare of the child, not the cost of ensuring it. If a mother is incapable of giving up smoking, is she capable of looking after a child?

Would you really take a child away from the parents because they smoke?

    By testing -
    This was the trial -
Interventions The control group received routine care, which was the offer of a face to face appointment to discuss smoking and cessation and, for those who attended and set a quit date, the offer of free nicotine replacement therapy for 10 weeks provided by pharmacy services, and four, weekly support phone calls.

The intervention group received routine care plus the offer of up to £400 of shopping vouchers: £50 for attending a face to face appointment and setting a quit date; then another £50 if at four weeks’ post-quit date exhaled carbon monoxide confirmed quitting; a further £100 was provided for continued validated abstinence of exhaled carbon monoxide after 12 weeks; a final £200 voucher was provided for validated abstinence of exhaled carbon monoxide at 34-38 weeks’ gestation.

Are they tested at the start to prove they are smokers in the first place? If so, how long would someone need to smoke for to "pass" this test? Anything to stop them starting up smoking again after the final test?

Well apparently passive smoking is so hazadours that it's been banned in public places, even ones consenting adults visit such as pubs. Yet it's perfectly OK to smoke at home with kids in the house who have no choice but to be there.

So you would remove the children?

That's the problem with brain dead schemes like this.

"Stop behaving badly and we'll reward you", but "always behave well and you get nothing".

The research shows the scheme succeeds with the first group. But says nothing about what impact it'll have on the second. If a handout affects the behaviour of the first group, why wouldn't it with the second? So maybe more people will start smoking because of this. Some may even find themselves unable to give up, so the whole purpose of the daft scheme is negated!
