  • Gold doesn’t generate an income whilst you’re owning it. The only potential for profit comes when you sell, so make sure you’re prepared to sit on your investment for a lengthy period & try to ensure you’re not using funds that you might need to call on at short notice.

Investing in gold bullion vs collectible is an interesting one. If you want to invest purely in gold bullion, standard Sovereigns or Krugerrands are generally the best way to go as they can be obtained at the lowest price premium over the current spot price. Depending on the quantity you buy will determine the premium over spot. If you buy one coin, you might be paying around 13% over the gold price. So… to generate any profit from your bullion purchase, you’ve got to see gold prices increase by at least 15% (assuming the dealer is buying back at 98% of its gold value).

I’ve used thegoldbullion.co.uk and bullionbypost.co.uk, both seem pretty good.

Buying collectable gold coins is a whole different ball game. You could potentially be paying many times over the intrinsic gold value, so knowledge is key here. The scarcity and the quality of the coin have a big impact in its value, so you need to know what you’re buying.

If you go down the route of collectable coins and assuming it’s British coins you’re interested in, you need to get this book:
Coins of England & the United Kingdom 2015

It lists every UK coin ever minted, along with valuation estimates based on various grades (its condition) of coin.

If you’re selling sovereigns, make sure you know what you’ve got. As some Sovereigns are more collectible than others, their value can vary. If you have a rare Sovereign and fail to mention this fact to a dealer, don’t be surprised if you’re offered the standard bullion value. Remember, knowledge is king!

A good resource for checking if you have a collectible sovereign:
