How good of an investment are collector gold coin, the sort you might get from the Royal Mint. I know the cost is well above the gold price but I'm not sure how much they increase in value over, say, 5 years

I'd be interested in how much they could decrease in value as well.0

In my view the offering neatly combines two of the worst investments available to the punter: gold, and collectibles.0 -
They are worth the weight of the coin x the price of gold (which varies .... a lot). Very unlikely to have any premium above that.
if you want to invest in gold, just buy ordinary bullion coins (also from the Royal Mint).0 -
Ok, thanks for the replies, my interest was sparked when I noticed a £100 (legal tender) Big Ben coin the R.M. issued earlier this month has just sold on ebay for £140. As most of the gold coins/sets issued by the R.M. sell out I thought they may increase in value, but it appears not0

I would go semi-numi e.g Perth Mint lunar series or Chinese Panda's0

Both very nice coins but I wouldn't call them numismatic, out and out bullion0

Would recommend buying from reputable company such as bullionbypost.co.uk. I found them reasonably priced and quick to deliver. Don't bother with postalbullion.com - tried to use them but bizarrely, they rejected my order for 'security reasons' offering no other explanation. Having searched online, it seems they do this quite a lot.
While you could trust the Royal Mint, they will simply rip you off as suggested in earlier posts.0 -
I think that as soon as something is advertised as being "collectable", it's probably not. Cynical, perhaps, but of the few items I've seen noted as having gained significantly in value, it's unusual that they are things originally promoted in that way.0

The only thing rarer than a rare coin is a buyer for a rare coin.
I wouldn't bother with Royal Mint as they tend to be very overpriced. If you just want gold then look for sovereigns which are CGT exempt.
I have ordered from Weighton Coins in the past and they were very good. There are a lot of decent dealers out there but do your research first to make sure you aren't being ripped off.0
