Buying PAYG phone for cheap handset only

Hi - can I run a hypothetical past anyone?

On behalf of my girlfriend, who wants a Samsung S4 mini - the cheapest I've seen it new (that isn't ebay) is from Vodafone direct for £125 on PAYG.

She also has an out-of-contract rolling deal with Vodafone on her dated blackberry. If she was to get a retention deal on this, sim only, could this then be immediately swapped to the PAYG handset?

Or if not, could the PAYG phone simply be immediately upgraded to a Vodafone sim only deal? (And cancelling the rolling contract in the process)

Thanks for any help - much appreciated - I did have a quick search for this on the forums, maybe not hard enough.:o

Not knowing the full details, my simple answer is ...

    Buy new Samsung
    Take SIM our of Blackberry
    Put SIM into Samsung

As long as it works, that's as much as you need to do ......

If the S4 is on the same network and uses the same size Sim then you can just place the contract Sim in the PAYG phone and it will be ready to go. if it need a different sized sim then just contact Voda and they should send the correct sized sim.
regarding to retention deal to SIMO yes as long as you make sure you get the right size sim for the S4
  • That's great, thanks

Hopefully we can get a good sim-only retention deal, buy the Vodafone PAYG S4, then simply swap the sims.
(It's a Blackberry Curve of some sort)

If the sim doesn't fit, I guess it's just a case of getting Vodafone to give us a new sim that will fit the S4 - and hopefully that won't be too laborious a process.

    Thanks again.

well getting a retentions deal on SIMO will be like a new contract , so you just need to request the correct sim.

have you checked SIMO on their website, so you can see if a retention deal will be worth it compared to what she is paying now

they seem to have some winter deals on at the moment http://www.vodafone.co.uk/shop/pay-monthly/sim-only-deals/index.htm

You don't have to do this, especially if your current deal is a good one, you can just carry on with what you have without doing anything ... but you may be able to get a better deal on sim only???
  • The winter sale offers are pretty decent really. Much better than the current deal which is about £15 pm with only 300 minutes and limited texts.

    Yes, that's rubbish by today's sim-only standards.

If she thinks the winter deals are better for her and want to keep her number then she would need to call retentions to cancel her contract (30 days notice) and get them to set up one of the winter SIMO deals with her number.
if she's not bothered about keeping her number, just cancel her current contract and order the SIMO deal
