i'm not really sure what you mean by this?

It wasn't a good choice - i mean, the odds were stacked against him - speculative stocks have their place, as i said, but not as 100% of the folio.

i just didnt want the OP to be put off buying single stocks because of this - its a poor choice and spending more time reading and researching may have made for a better outcome.

I have spent a lot of time reading/researching various stocks and funds these past few months. My ISA, SIPP and cash accounts hoover up most of my spare income so individual stocks are very much down the list a bit. I only have 3% of my total amount in this single equity stock - However it does form 100% of my 'still very young' share portfolio.

My average in Afren is 23p - however I may risk averaging down some towards 9/10p depending on how the days trading goes tomorrow. It may start going up after Fridays RNS - we'll see.

No. Based on a plan to take advantage of the drop in oil price. Looking at the others in my list it would seem I picked the wrong one to start with! :)

    Yep - up 88% today

Happy to be a spectator rather than a participant personally but thanks for the thread

It was 126% up at one point.

Unfortunately it didn't drop enough early on to hit my top-up/average down trigger. If it had I would've made back all my losses in a single day.

So still 50% down personally but the way this share behaves you never know whats going to happen come 0800.

Its a bit of fun when i'm not in work though :) - I think.

When you are starting out, there is a temptation to cherry-pick things that you think could do really well really fast.

If you are unlucky, they do just that.

(Yes, I did mean to say that).

Love that, great quote to remember. Best thing that can happen to a lot of new investors is to get a short, sharp lesson against active investing and individual concentrated stock buying! As long as the lesson doesn't bankrupt you completely it's often worth it....TO THE INDEX!

Just had a 13% realised gain in 1 day. Not wishing to boast as overall I am not doing very well but it's amazing to think that that return would have taken 26 years in my NatWest cash ISA at 0.5% pa!

Basically I knew Low & Bonar results were out yesterday but that the shareprice was beaten down. I waited until the results were out, checked they were Ok and bought early, before 9am (when the big boys get going) at 51.8p. They went up to around 55p and settled back a little. Then today up a further 10% so I sold at 58.7p. If they fall back I will probably buy again as I think they are alright as a long-term hold too. Just shows what you can achieve with a little research, timing, and a little luck.
  • A little luck - that'd be nice :) If you can find a stock that isn't being played by MMs and shorters then luck wouldn't be necessary.

I made a good call today on LOIL - a x2 oil price tracking ETF. I read that the US was to announce an increase in its oil stocks indicating an increasing global oversupply so I sold out before I went to pick up the kids. I just checked the figures and I would've lost 16% - £160 if I hadn't sold. Not much but better in my pocket!

With WTI Crude down 8% today many oiler SPs are going to struggle tomorrow morning (assuming no immediate improvement prior to 0800). An opportunity perhaps for the best ones. I've my eyes on a few that have put out very positive RNS's today.
