Bosch S5 car battery starting to die - warranty claim?

I've had a Bosch S5 battery from new since March 2011 and it's starting to struggle to turn over the Mondeo TDCi on cold mornings.

I bought it online but cant find invoice, apart from credit card payment statement. I also have the original delivery box with DHL label and the name and address of the battery supplier.

The Mondeo battery charging system is working as checked voltage.

Who should I try and contact if I was to try and claim under the warranty, the supplier or Bosch?

It is probably not worth claiming if I have to pay to send it to the original supplier, as the are not local.

Also is there an easy way of identifying the manufacture date on the battery?

Lazy starter motor is an issue with those. Clutch/Flywheel debris clogs the starter motor and it gets slow in the cold.

Have you tested the battery voltage?

I hope it's not the DMF, had to have one replaced in the Focus, felt it going through the clutch. They're not cheap to replace.

Mondeo DMF feels fine, but maybe as it's done 140K and is 12 years old it could be on the way out. Probably not worth getting it replaced.

I'll recheck battery voltages tomorrow, just assumed cold start problem related to struggling battery, as otherwise starts fine.
  • I've replaced two Bosch silver batteries in succession that failed early, so many things aint what they used to be.

And the S5 is supposed to be their top spec battery ideal for high drain applications like heated windscreens etc etc...

I have my doubts about the quality also. I cant think how long ive had mine but it does seem to turn over slower when its really cold.

But maybe my startermotor is the issue also?

It doesnt mean the clutch or DMF is about to fail. Just an accumulation of debris from them.

They maybe worn, but have many miles left. My last car had a high clutch when i bought it. I thought its going to need a new one and 4/5 years later it was still high and never once slipped, Even towing a caravan.

I've got an old car battery in the garage, it just came off my kitcar, it's voltage measures 13.04v.
I've got a new battery on the car, it measures 12.97v.

The first battery won't start the car at all, won't even turn over. The new battery has no problem at all.

    Voltage means sweet FA.

Warranties on car batteries appear almost pointless. Nobody seems able to ever make a successful claim. They are always told it's something else, normally the alternator.

Voltage means a lot.. You didnt test the voltage with the battery under load...

Put a load onto your old battery and the voltage will plummet.

Got to disagree. Had a Bosch S5, lasted approx eighteen months, went back to ECP, they tested it confirmed it was faulty and exchanged it on the spot.
