London to LA. BA or US Airways?

Hi guys,

I'm flying from london to LA economy class in April. If you had the choice, would you choose to fly with US Airways or BA? And why please?

Price / flight times etc. are similar fro both airlines.

Thanks

  • I'd go with BA, it's the new A380 so new cabin. Generally I think the overall product is supposed to be better on BA than their american counterparts.

If the prices are similar then BA every time. I'd even be willing to pay £50-100 more to fly with them.

The new American Boeing 777-300 does get very good reviews. Although that's probably because its such an upgrade over their product on any other aircraft.

The BA A380 is nice. Brand new aircraft, feels nice and spacious and the entertainment system was great with a good screen size. But at the end of the day you are still just sat in a big aircraft for 11 hours. Economy travel over the Atlantic is much of a muchness. Pick the most convenient flights and the best price.

Try searching Iberia/Finnair. They codeshare on the BA flights and sometimes come up cheaper than booking a BA ticket. You end up on the same aircraft though.
  • Have a look to see if Main Cabin Extra (MCE) is available on AA.

Lots of extra legroom, slightly wider seat and the additional charge is about £85 each way.
You can upgrade after you've booked your economy ticket, as long as seats are available.

I feel so much better reading this post......

I booked our flights for end of may LHR to LAX.... US Airways booking, but on the AA plane (777-300, supposedly new plane)...
    Cost £500 direct....
I then read on seat guru about Bum class (coach/economy) being Sardine Tin style!! :(
A week later, Air New Zealand were doing same route/dates for £490, and I read that bum class on air new Zealand flights were OK...
I then read on Seat Guru seats were same, so no better comfort with air new Zealand over American Airlines!!!

So now, I gotta wait until the day before to book our seats (want the couples seats at the rear), and hope to get them!
And then still have a 11hr 25 min sardine tin style flight!!!! :D:D
I think Ryanair have more legroom than AA! :D

** I just logged into my AA booking, it lets me pick crap seats free, which I hope I could change if I pick A & C seats in a 3 row, at a later date...
However, it also offers me 1 way, upgrade seats to the MCE (Main cabin extra)..... Cost is $245 for the 2 seats..... hmmmmm, tempting!! **

You can upgrade yourself to MCE at any time, subject to availability.

See if you can book via TopCashback. £7.50.

Price it up with a hotel on the BA site.

Price it up with a car on the BA site.

It's sometimes cheaper as a package and you get ATOL protection.

Register each traveller with the BA Executive Club. The Avios your trip is going to earn will be worth at least a "free" return flight to Europe (£35 cost, including bags).

If you can cheaply and conveniently get yourselves to Dublin or Copenhagen fares from there are under £380 for some dates. Saving may be negated by hassle, but a way of getting a better class seat for less too.

EDIT: Some sub-£300 return seats from Norway to LAX are currently appearing. Flying on BA via Heathrow.
