Spare phone as Mifi?

I was thinking of buying a Mifi for use on holidays abroad. When in the UK I can use my Three SIM in my phone for tethering iPads, laptops etc when away from home but they don't allow tethering when abroad even in the Feel At Home countries and it drains the battery.

It now occurs to me that I have a spare mobile (Galaxy Note 1) so I am wondering whether I could use this as a Mifi? I used to be able to tether with it so I am assuming that if I bought a data SIM which is OK for use abroad this should work but am I right in this?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, it should work fine, as long as it's unlocked for whatever network you get the sim on.

Does it have any network branding? The only real exception to should is that sometimes the networks sell phones with customised firmware where the wifi hotspot option is only available with the right sim/plan.

Sounds good. The phone is unlocked so I'll get it charged up and check it. Thanks for the reply.
