No real need to worry that you get ripped off if you follow the sensible precautions like not taking dodgy cheques from the scams above (and be very careful about that as there are rather good fakes around these days that do fool a cashier).
For a grand's worth of a car I'd take cash on collection, period. If you're really worried about it being fake, got to your bank with the buyer and pay in the money first to check that it's OK.0 -
Direct bank transfer can be dodgy as you are giving away your bank details (in addition to your address and phone number) so try and steer clear. Not many people would do a bank transfer for £1000 when this is an easy amount to withdraw.
And of course, when you pay for things with a cheque, people don't get this information?
Why are people so worried about giving bank details. Direct transfer is one of the safest ways of receiving money (OK I'm sure someone will come up with something to dispute this).0 -

why are people so worried about giving bank details?? Erm because unfortunately in the society we live in someone can hijack your bank account all too easily so due diligence is the way forward. How do you expect a bank to respond to someone who says they gave a stranger their bank details over the phone only to have money stolen from their account? If i walked in to the bank and mentioned to the bank manager that i dont mind giving my details to strangers i'm sure he'd have something to say about that!
I'm not saying dont use bank transfers at all as the process is safe - you bank details in a strangers hands however, are not, and i certainly wouldnt recommend it. And thats my honest opinion! :TI never missed a payment :T , I paid off all my credit cards :T , I paid of all my loans :T , i have a work mobile :T - but am now "medium" credit risk

Alant1000 i agree i would not give anyone my bank details .
You would not believe the last two days i have had with selling my car it has been a nightmare the sooner it goes the better.I have had to take my email address off auto trader website as instructed by auto trader. Those scams that i mentioned about them sending me bankers drafts for large amounts of money it has happened 3 times now in the last two days.
I have had so many emails offering me money and not one honest buyer ,auto trader said they are having lots of this happening at present. My husband replyed to one and told them not so nicley not to email again or we will report to police.
Just a quick question i have now put the car on ebay but as an auction i have asked to be payed by paypal somebody mentioed not to use paypal i thought paypal was safe.0 -
But you can never prove the buyer picked it up.
They can tell paypal they went to pick it up but the car wasn't there. The onus is then on YOU as the seller to prove the buyer has got it..... you will lose your money!
Thats as far as I understand it anyway

Paypal is safe to an extent - what i would do is ask for a DEPOSIT vai paypal (say £250) - non refundable - so that the winner is offering you a level of commitment, say this needs to be paid within 48 hours.
I wouldnt recommend it for the full amount, as A) you have to pay a percentage fee to Paypal, so the larger the transaction, the more you will pay them if the funds are paid entirely through paypal. Also, there are occasions (rare) when stolen / cloned cards are used on Paypal to pay, and you would then have to hand all the money back.... probably after your car is gone.
Dont be put off - scammers and spammers are part of the hassle of selling a car, just put on your advert *strictly no canvassers* then you wont get traders and other annoying people trying to sell you services to help sell your car. STAY AWAY FROM A COMPANY CALLED CARDATA IF THEY CALL.
hope this helps.I never missed a payment :T , I paid off all my credit cards :T , I paid of all my loans :T , i have a work mobile :T - but am now "medium" credit risk

Cash is the best way. I bought a car for £1400 cash.
Go out on the test drive with them.Happy chappy0 -
trading standards have said anyone who recieves this kind of offer to let them know straight away, most of these scams are coming from south africa.dont forget although a cheque is cashed, it can take up to 6 months to properly clar through the system, if its found to be fake you will have to pay the money back, no money, no car, life of debt. BE WARNEDI really need your advice again i have had an offer now for my car the car is only for sale just over £1000.The gentleman who wants to buy it is saying he will send me a cheque for £6000 i will put that cheque into my bank and when it clears i take out my money and the rest i give to a shipping company when they come to pick up my car.
I have not responded to him this sounds abit strange to me what do you think ?Why would he pay out all this money for shipping costs and trust me with his money when he does not know me .
Am i right to be wary i cannot work out what he is up to has anyone ever heard of this ?0
