But people like GwylimT coming out with idiotic stuff like 'dont leave screws lying around' doesnt help. Nobody said it was at home. Presumptious idiot.

Then put a muzzle on pooch if they pick things up, its our very basic responsibility as owners.

Thank you for the reasonable reaponse. First one.

And some people would do the same with their car. If anything needed doing they would pay anything to get it sorted. Others would respond differently.

Point is that fee should have been transparent and it actually says on the RCVS website that out of hours fees need to be explained. Especially to new customers.

Nothing was explained. No consultation fee. They didnt mention any costs for xray or they would do one.

They just said on the phone bring him in they will make him sick. I got there they said they will take him in the back somebody will be out in a minite to talk. Next minute I ben told they have done xray snd slap a bill on me.

So it was out of hours - in that case £130 is a bargain. Have you never taken an animal to the vet before? Welcome to the world of responsible pet ownership, it comes with costs.

I agree that the form you filled out probably had a line in it about giving consent to do what was necessary.

Very reasonable, the last call out fee I had for my cat was £85, I know at our vet a sedation an xray on a small dog costs more than what OP had to pay. Thank goodness for insurance.

If you think it is idiotic to prevent an animal eating things which can harm them that is fair enough on you, but it isn't a good situation for the animal.

The customer cannot dictate to the vet the treatment he wants the animal to have.

Customer ---- my dog has swallowed a screw, I want you to make it sick it up.

Vet...---- I would recommend an xray

Customer ---- I demand that you make my dog sick it up.

    Vet..:doh::wall: Take your dog elsewhere.

No self respecting vet would do what the op wants.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Its not about the money. I have enough.

    Its the principle.

And read my other comment. I was being responsible by taking him to the vet. Upon knowing fees I would have either just gone ahead or quickly checked again (taking a few minutes to just make sure I dont spend unnecessary money). If they told me the price and I could t find it I would have gone ahead of course so please no more comments about irrelevant things

The principle is that if you are price sensitive you need to ask the price up front, not whinge about it later.

Your dog has been cared for and now you have to pay for that. Until there's a National Vets Service that will be the way it is.

My girlfriend rang the vets and the receptionist spoke to the vet and basically said we need to bring him in to make him sick.

Are you sure this was what was said? I am not a vet or claim to be any expert but even I know if an animal or person swallows something you do not "make them sick" you give them an x-ray.

I do see your point in a way, is this your first visit to a vets? As I don't have insurance every time I have visited I ask "how much" like you I always have money available for treatment and its not the case of money before the animal but I do like to know what the estimated costs are beforehand, no vet will be able to give you an exact cost as they don't know what they will find. BUT it is your responsibility to ask, the majority of pet owners have insurance so a vet will assume you have and the costs are covered.

You should have doubled checked if you could find the screw before you took it to the vets. If the situation was different I could see you posting a thread along the lines of negligent vet, I took my dog to the vets telling them it had swallowed a screw, they advised me to look for the screw and whilst I was doing so the screw caused complications causing my dog pain and costing me more money as the operation was more complicated than if they had just got on and done an x-ray straight away.

Any responsible vet would not have been happy leaving the animal with a potential screw in it whilst you looked, the time to do that was before you contacted them.
  • Yes that is what they said on the phone. We need to bring him to make him sick.

Yes first tome i have had to take him to vets

The double checking is what you needed to do BEFORE you left to go to the vets.

It would have been irresponsible of the vet not to X-ray the dog once they had been told the dog had swallowed a screw.

They acted in the best interest of your dog.

Your dog is FINE. £130 is a small price to pay to know your dog is OK. Be grateful it didn't swallow the screw. Surely that is the important thing here???
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
