    Hello Msers,
I have the Dell Optiplex 745. I know it's old & 2 usb posts are loose but I prefer a desktop,my age I guess. I might go for usb dvdrw as they look cheap enough.
P.s I went for the NookHD+ as I was spending time in the hospital. Very pleased with both.

Does the Nook have the software, and the processing power, to encode DVDs into an appropriate format?

No way! Desktops are sooo much more comfortable to use than laptops! You get a proper, ergonomic keyboard, a decent sized screen, and a proper mouse... Not to mention they're cheaper and easier to repair!

So I'd say it's not so much your age as your wisdom that makes you prefer a desktop PC! :D
