Haven't used them personally, but may ask for a quote for my DD going to Uni in London. But her stuff needs to go up on a specific day and it's a Sunday!

  • mmh, I may seriously be looking into that when I get back from my trip, just out of curiosity how much that would cost me. It also seems to be a centralised service, so would save the time for calling around companies. Found a guy on gumtree who would have done the trip for £150 in his van, unfortunately he's going there next week already, too soon for me.

Why does it have to be a Sunday? That'll probably cost ya dear! Can't DD survive until Monday without all her belongings? ;)

Hi all! This is my first post so if my question is in the wrong place, it should be excused as newbie faux pas!? Here's the deal: I'm going to start uni in September and will have to move from London to Aberdeen the cheapest way possible!

I'm a mature student (no parents to pay for it) and have been on benefits due to illness for the past few years so funds are almost non-existing. I'll be trying to get rid of as much stuff as possible but will still be left with several boxes (clothes, books, CDs ... the usual) and a cycle.

I'd be happy for any suggestions as weird as they may sound, like, I was wondering if I should send the boxes by courier which - depending on the company - is around £10 for up to 30kg? Also, came across a website that (allegedly) specialises in student relocations. According to their online calculator, I'd have to shell out around £330 for the move ... gulp! Does anyone know of cheaper companies?

    So ... any ideas??

Not sure if this has been suggested - I'm too lazy to check :o

My "student son" did exactly this but the other way around! He hired a small van on a one way tarriff with Hertz (i.e. picked it up in Aberdeen and dropped it off in one of the London hire centres)... (only of use if you can drive!)

DD has to be home for a big family "do" on the Sat. and her course starts on the Mon am. Sunday is the only day we can get her up there and guarantee she'll be around to take delivery of the stuff. We are trying to arrange going up with her in the car - you do know how many clothes an 18-yr old girl has! :rotfl:

I do remember from that time that I did have a lot of shoes, like 30 pairs! So, yeah, I get the idea! Well, good luck with everything, uh, if you don't mind, could you tell me via PM or so what they quoted you for the trip (where from and to) from that website (if you decide to contact them), just to satisfy my curiosity

Well here goes - ive booked my unimoveit.com service, for a grand total of £187.50 for Manchester to Edinburgh :S

But if it's as convenient as they make it out then i'd be happy! Lets see how they deliver :)
  • Well, good luck then, u2o, when's the big day? :) ... well, the clock's ticking for me, too, I think I'll be getting in touch with partload.biz and see what happens. Next prob is going to be storage! I'll be moving into student accommodation, I reckon there's not much room for anything, so was hoping I could put a few boxes in storage but it looks that the cheapest is about £60/month in Aberdeen?? Shocker!
  • Apologies if this has been suggested already but have you tried posting an advert for help moving on gumtree?

They have regional boards - take a look at https://www.gumtree.co.uk.

It's free to post an advert and so you can specify what you want and how much you are willing to pay.

hehe cheers the big day is Saturday - with boxes being delivered tomorrow! Well that's what i entered on the order form anyway, so im assuming they're gonna be able to do those dates. I was gonna go on part-loadz but in the end i settled for service operated by accredited (in one way or another) removals company who seemed big enough to trust.

and yeah i tried gumtree, found an ad that was doing part-load, emailed them but no response. and i need a service where they collect one day, and deliver to destination a week later as im busy inbetween - and can't do same day, which is possible with unimoveit so i just settled for that!
