Santander suspended my online banking due to virus

I recieved a call telling me my online banking account had been frozen by Santander due to a virus on my computer. Does this seem a little odd? how would they know I had a virus on my computer, or have I just given my details to a scam? I think it was Santander as my online banking has indeed been frozen, and they seemed to know how much money I had in my account.

They said their anti virus picked it up, and that they are sending me new online banking details.

Genuine?

    What details did you give?

    Certainly smells like a scam.
  • Account number, sort code, last transactions ....
  • My online banking has been frozen so this would appear genuine, apparenty when I tried to do a transaction online it flagged up that I had a virus on their own anti virus software...
  • This happened to me too. Had a new log in identifier etc because I had a virus on the laptop. It was a pain but it does happen, mine happened the day before we went on holiday so it wasn't convenient.

Call Santander now, they can confirm whether there's been a problem on your account.

What's done is done but in future, do not give any unknown caller any of your details - not your name, address, DOB, account number etc etc.

Hang up. Call your bank from a different phone, of wait half an hour before you make the call, so you can be sure that you don't inadvertently call the caller/scammer.

Also use a number that you have for them, not the number the caller gave you.

That's reassuring, makes me wonder how they can pick up a virus on your computer though! still it's probably a good thing.

They don't. Unless you have an application from the installed, they couldn't know what's happening on your computer. Do you use Rapport?

I don't know, I do however know that I had picked up a few viruses in the past few days so this would make sense....

I will call the online banking team in the morning.

Banks cannot tell if you have a virus, Rapport usually picks up Keyloggers ; or wrong urls redirection to spoof sites
    ;Sounds like a scam.it's rife.
Don't panic, that's what scammers rely on.BUT, seems in your OP , you did, and provided them with info.???wrong move.
Just ring your bank, asap;should have already done so????
