miele - washing machines and vacuums... overpriced ?

The problem with Miele is the cost of spares once the warranty runs out. Routine items like pumps, which can be £15 on other brands, may cost many times more.
I appreciate your view but how likely are they to fail?
We only replaced ours due to an expensive controller being needed which the repairer suggested was unlucky.0 -
We have had a Miele oven from new, coming up on 27 years now, it's had 1 new fan element.
And my Miele vacuum cleaner is 26 years old, never any problems. I also have a newer one, I thought the price was not bad.
Their bigger appliances do seem quite expensive these days, so we usually go for Bosch, AEG or Siemens.
We bought our son and DIL a Bosch washer in January 1998, it's still going strong 2 kids and 17 years later.0 -
The market sets the price for the quality you are buying
to see this in undisputed terms, go take a look on an auction site at the sold prices of 3 year old washing machines compared to the purchase prices, the biggest drops in value are for the cheap brands
as has been said, you get what you pay for (normaly) there are occasions when marketing will make us believe something is worth more than it is but if it isn't the truth will normaly come out sooner or later0 -
interesting comments nicke - but i don't think it always works, especially for new goods - otherwise rolls royces, bentleys, 500 dollar handbags... all overpriced for what they are (because there are comparable goods in quality for a much lower price) - would not be worth as much. just because ppl are willing to pay x amount for something, it does not mean it is 'worth it'.
just because ppl are willing to spend so much on a miele - it doesn't mean it's not overpriced for what it is. - ie, there may be something of another brand, of a very similar quality to miele but much lower price
looking at the hoovers on the market - the vax is about 1/4 price of some miele hoovers, and it doesn't look so bad.
same goes for many washing machines.
miele is without a doubt a high quality brand. but i'm wondering whether it is value for money - because in my experience, the upkeep of them are expensive (with their vacuums i'm thinking a new hepa filter every year and their expensive vacuum bags). Compare that to a bagless vax which has a washable hepa filter.
the same goes for their washing machines. are there washing machines that are comparable to miele washing machines but for a much lower price.... i believe so...0 -
I've got a Meile dishwasher which is maybe 20 years old, and I've no plans to replace it.
One issue with their washing machines is that they are small capacity, so not really any good for a family.0 -

My point was the second hand market gives a very good idea of real value. and at second hand prices Miele can be 3 to 4 times the price of cheaper second hand brands. people (that is the market) pay that price because they believe it is good value
Your point bout cars holds true. you have to look at tco (total cost of ownership) the more expensive brands have huge drops in price (back to my point of advertising selling a brand beyond its value) but there are still good examples of better value from higher priced alternatives, say a golf v an astra same concept, 4 door family diesel yet after 5 years the depreciation is miles apart, why? because the second hand market values the two 5 year old cars at different ends of the value/quality spectrum0 -

Just got a miele vacuum today, 4 bags are £10 and that includes replacement filters, one bag according to the manual lasts 50 hours?, even if you half that to 25 hours vacuuming, doesn't seen that expensive, also considering the bags form part of the filtering process doesn't seem to bad.0 -
Can't comment on the vacuum cleaners.
25 years ago I got my first Miele washing machine: I was told to expect 20 years normal life from it. As I did an average of 3 full loads a day (for various reasons!) I was pleased that it lasted 10. Absolutely no problems until it just went.
So 15 years ago I got another one (it moved with us) slowly the workload reduced & for 5 years has been an average of one load a day.
I had wonderful Miele ovens for 20 years, left them in the house when I moved, still working well. Dishwasher was 10 years old at that point, and I left that as well.
Waiting to see how my new lot work out!0
