Hi everyone:beer:
I'm new to this and really don't know how to work this site yet.
I'm just wanting some help and advice please.
I have just been told I've got a job in Burnley Lancashire and I'm going to have to move up from Birmingham. I really don't know the area but everyone keeps telling me that living in Burnley is a no no. I been told maybe Colne Lancashire or Rawtenstall as you get the countryside and its only 15/20ish minutes. Have also been told that they are quite a lot of asians in these places and I know around where I'am now there is quite alot of trouble with whites and Asian gangs.
Can anyone help me please?:A
Thank you

Hi, in Feb 1987 we had to move from Solihull to somewhere that my husband could commute from to Liverpool. I'm writing to tell you I actually thought at that time that I was going to be seeing "dark satanic mills" and other bad things.
Twenty-eight years later and I would live nowhere else than the beautiful Lancashire coast!
I suggest you look at websites like Zoopla, if you have a smart phone look at the app (free) called Crime Map and I think there's another website called something like up my street to get information about areas which you're thinking of moving to.
I am told the M65 gets very busy in rush hour but I think they're thinking more the Preston end, not sure though.
Have to say some of those Pendle villages are gorgeous!

I'm completing on a house in Burnley next week! Like any town, there are nice areas and areas where you wouldn't want to buy, but Burnley itself is no better / worse than any other northern mill town.
I grew up in Rawtenstall, have lived in Manchester most of my adult life but am very excited to be moving to Burnley. It seems to have a really bad reputation but it's quite unfounded to be honest, I actually think it's a great place to live.
In terms of the Asian population, yes, there is a substantial one, but (and I know this sounds really bad...) aside from the riots that went on some years back I've never seen any 'gang' trouble. My missus and I quite happily walk around an Asian supermarket in Duke Bar (a large Asian area) every Sunday to buy groceries, and people are very welcoming.
You won't see the kinds of problems here that you see in Birmingham, everything here is on a much smaller scale compared to cities like Brum or Manchester. I have family in Sheldon and spent many a summer holiday there as a youth, so I have a little experience of the place.
Like I say, I know most of East Lancashire pretty well so if you've got any questions feel free to ask.
I should also say (although I'm a little old for it now), Burnley's also a great place for a night out! Cheap beer, taxis and lots of fun.0 -
What is your budget? We live in the Ribble Valley around 15 mins drive from Burnley. Its beautiful. Fantastic schools, a brilliant place to live. It also depends what interests you. I believe Blackburn has nicer areas than Burnley, if you choose wisely. Its then a quick dash down the M65. Look up Mellor, Wilpshire, Whalley, Langho, Barrow. All lovely, with houses in a wide range of budgets - or you could go even more rural depending on what you're looking for.0

Thank u everyone, lots of information. My budget is around £150.000.0

You would possibly get something nice in the areas I mentioned, but most likely flat or terraced as RV can be pricey depending on which area. Cherry Tree and Feniscowles in Blackburn are nice in that budget too and handy for M65. Clitheroe is a lovely market town and would def get something nice. Also handy for train links to Manchester. Good luck!0

Weir village between Bacup and Burnley great house prices, loads of great views0

The good news is your budget should go a long way
I can't say I know burnley like the back of my hand but I know it a little. I wouldn't worry about Asians as to be fair they tend to keep to themselves / areas
What you need to decide is how far you want to commute, what type of property /location you want etc.
Something to bear in mind is that burnley will have better rail connections later this year when the Todmorden curve is reinstated leading to direct services to Manchester and other locations on a circular route
I wouldn't say Colne is anything special though villages near such as Foulridge tend to be popular
I would suggest renting initially until you settle in job. That way you can get to know the area people etc. also you wouldn't be stuck with a property as the market and sales tend to be slower in the North and certainly don't rise the same so you would do well to break even if you wanted to move on0
