PAYG- help with options?
Hi all,
I have a PAYG mobile with orange and on average I top up £5, i'd say on average, every 40-50 days.
As you may have gathered, I don't use my phone all that much and rarely make calls. Even when i do, I'm forever conscious of my credit and mainly use my phone to text.
I'm pretty sure I'm living in the dark ages here, but I'm a self-confessed novice in the world of mobiles, which is why i seek your advice.
Ideally i'd like to stay with Orange and continue to pay a similar amount however it would be nice to get a bit more for my buck.
I currently own a Samsung S5620 which has served me well but I'm also on the look out for a modern chic handset.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to look? or perhaps offer some suggestions/further advice?
Go easy on me please
Thanks

I'm not sure how much "bang" you are expecting for approximately £3.33 a month?0

Good point, but either way i'm just curious as to what options are available. I tend to top up by £5 because as i only really require the minimum. I'd be willing to spend a bit more though or look at moving to another network.0

"£5 every 50 days" is meaningless too. It's more reasonable to say how many minutes and texts you need approximately per month.
Re staying with Orange, you are unlikely to find the best deal there. If it's their signal, then many cheaper networks use the same signal, e.g. Asda, Virgin, Family Mobile, White Mobile, Vectone, ...
White Mobile is likely to be the cheapest for low texts/minutes usage with 3p/6p per minute and 5p/text. Orange definitely charge much more (up to 30p and 14p, but this may depend on the tariff).0 -
If you want a new phone you will have to pay for it one way or another, either in a subsided contract cost (so your monthly payment would be higher), or buying the phone outright and either sticking with your current PAYG SIM, getting a cheap pay-monthly SIM, or moving to an alternative or cheaper PAYG provider.
Buying the phone outright is usually the cheapest option, so should this thread primarily be about which phone should you get?
Are you with TalkTalk for your broadband?0 -
I used to be with Orange (as did my Mum, and her usage is probably even less than you), but came to my senses and switched to Giffgaff instead. My Mum probably tops up £10 every 6 months, and after getting a new smartphone (my old phone wasn't 3G), I switched over to 3's PAYG as its even cheaper.
Why on earth would you want to stick with Orange?
Best bang for buck option for a light user who quite likes the idea of a nice shiny smartphone (even if they won't make full use of it) seems to be a Moto G at around £115 (or maybe just the cheaper Moto E for around £65?), along with a PAYG sim from 3.0 -
Thanks everyone, suffice to say i am slightly more perplexed than when i first posted, nevertheless i appreciate your input.
I will consider some of your suggestions.

you could go on a monthly plan from £7 which would give you a new phone
Talk Mobile (use Vodafone network) http://www.talkmobile.co.uk/handsets/smart-phones
Tesco Mobile ( use o2 network) http://shop.tescomobile.com/pay-monthly/mobile-phones/0 -

TalkTalk are another cheapish provider for pay monthly, better if you are already a customer of theirs.0 -
