Can anyone tell me if there are any penalties in taking out money during that month - like do they not pay interest for that whole month? TY

There are no penalties - it is instant access.

Regarding the general question of ID requirements, I may be wrong, but I believe there are two methods of verifying your identity when opening a new account.
1 - doing an electronic check which basically looks at your credit record but doesn't actually do a credit check - it checks if your name and date of birth is known at the address you are applying for
2 - asking you to provide proof of id (passport or driving licence) and proofs of address (eg bank or credit card statements, utility bills etc)

Even when you an existing halifax customer applying for a new halifax account, they still identity check you, and they ask for you to provide the documentation.

As this is Sainsbury's bank I would guess they go via option 2.

If driving licence is used as proof of anything, any organisation will always need both parts.

I have opened, on line, both a Halifax bank account and a Sainsburys account in the last month and have not had to provide any documented proof of ID. I am an existing Halifax customer. A money laundering check with Experian was done by the Halifax haven't checked yet for the Sainburys account.

I applied for a Sainsburys Bank Internet saver on 22nd June this year. Today, 31st July, I still do not have access through the online portal.

Even though I am on the electoral register, AND having sent them my driving license, credit card bill and BT bill, I'm still waiting.

I called them this morning to find out what was going on, and was told that I need to send more ID, because:

My BT bill is supposed to be within less than 3 months old. It was dated 24th April 2007.

My Driving Licence was only the paper part, and not the card as well. (I'm not sending that through the post).

My credit card statement was fine.

They are now asking me to send more proof of ID, which would probably take the total time waiting for this account to be authorised to 2 months.

    I think not.

I have now requested the funds to be returned to me.

The world has gone mad with this ultra-checking business. I have recently set up 2 other accounts with different banks, and have had no such problems.

My advice to all is, if you fancy waiting forever, and sending everything you have in your filing cabinet to prove who you are, go with Sainsbury's. Otherwise, steer clear.

    End of rant.

I agree with most of that. I'm currently with ING and obviously saw Sainsburys as the better option. However, for the sake of a few (and I mean a few) extra quid interest a month, do I really want to send enough documentation through the post, to enable anyone to steal my identity?

I've opened my Sainsburys account and transferred money from my Nationwide flexaccount into it. Took 3 days.
But I'm not sure how I setup my Nationwide account on the Sainsburys site so I can transfer funds back to Natiowide if ever needed.
Everything I've tried so far hasn't worked.

How is the correct way to do this?

In most cases it will not be necessary to send documents. Sainsbury's use online verification. It's only if you fail to pass the online checks will further ID be required.

You don't set up your Nationwide details from the Sainsbury's site.

You login to your nationwide account at https://www.nationwide.co.uk and set up a transfer from that end.

    EDIT

Please ignore above. I thought the transfer was from Nationwide to Sainsburys.

Jem16, you can set up payments mandates with the Sainsburys account
under options, select payment mandates, then at bottom, create mandate. I did this to pay funds back from Sainsburys into my HSBC account

Thank you for pointing this out to the OP who asked about transferring fom sainsburys to nationwide.

I misread the previous post. I thought the transfer was nationwide to Sainsbury's.

    Hi!
I'd just like to say that I've opened two accounts with Sainsbury's Online and had absolutely no problems at all. The accounts were opened almost instantly and I pay into them via bank transfers and standing orders and so far there hasn't been a hitch. I do all my banking online as I find this gives me far greater control over things, much better than trawling off to a bank queue in my lunch hour!
Toto, something tells me we're not in Kansas anymore......
