Hello everyone
I hope you guys can give me some advice on this matter as I would like to see if I can save something; at the moment I am struggling to understand how all this works.

The information that I have in hand at the moment are as follow:

I pay Electricity & Gas to British Gas

Payments are made monthly.
I have checked online the usage of my last bill and it comes out as:
around 1000kwh for electricity
around 2500kwh for gas

This website has a section where I filled all the details about the usage and it came out as I could possibly save around £600!!!

Now the problem is that I want to know what other information I require and what things I should be aware of when it comes doing these researches.

Can someone shed some light on this matter?

Thank you

    What is your annual usage?

Your figures look more like quarterly sums. And whether annual or monthly or quarterly you are not likely to save £600 - I suspect a winter quarterly figure has mistakenly been multiplied across the year for a too great a usage.

So pop to the comparison site again and use your estimate for your annual usage and make sure you choose annual consumption as inputs.

Ok I checked it now and this is what I found; It's quaterly

    Gas 16,256
    Elec 4,785

There were 4 consumption rate for 2014 (the last one on the 5th of November) so I added them all up and the results above is what I received.

It says my saving is around £300 with green energy.

is this how it works? should I just contact the new company and switch?

Are you living in a mansion with no doors and windows? If the above figures are quarterly, then you are looking at 65,000 kWhs annual usage for gas and 19,140Kwhs for electricity. By way of comparison, I live in a 5 bed house and base my usage on figures of 10,400kWhs for gas and 2400kwHs for electricity.

Forget about adding all the bills together. See if you can find a bill with actual readings. Post those readings with the date that the meter was read along with readings taken today. We will then see if we can help provide you with some projected figures to work with.

Remember if you put rubbish figures into a comparison site, you will get rubbish readings out.

I am so SORRY, I meant that the figures were written quarterly and I added them up and the reading I showed in my previous post is as a result of those sums. The result above for gas and elec is annual reading.

    I live in a 4 bedroom house, 5+ people.

My bills are online and I am using them to check my energy usage, all these information have been retrieved from my online account of british gas.

Any comparison ignore the direct debit estimate what really counts is the tariff costs .

This looks about right for a decent size 4 bed with 5+ people, just put these in a comparison site and switch.

You should end up with a direct debit well under £100 a month a think.

I agree but.... The OP needs to confirm that he hasn't been adding up estimated readings. If he would give us some actual readings and dates then he would get the answers that he is seeking from the informed people who populate these forums.

Hengus, if I go in my consumption history , the reading type is eater estimate or customer read : shown as below:

Date Reading type Meter Read Consumption(kWh)
    05 Nov 2014 Estimated 29167 1355.0
    14 Jul 2014 Customer read 27812 960.0
    22 Apr 2014 Meter Reader 26852 1230.0
    11 Jan 2014 Customer read 25622 1240.0

How do I check the actual readings?

I think I see what the problem is. We are confusing consumption with meter readings.

Do you have the actual meter readings for the 11 Jan 2014? If you would post these with today's readings then it will be easy to work out what you have used over the past 12 months.
