My dad has kindly offered to pay for Ds and I to go to London on the train and go to the Natural history museum. I'm thinking we might stay over and see a musical as well. Charlie and the chocolate factory or Matilda (depending on cost). Is there an easy way of planning where to stay in relation to theatre, museum etc. London is soooooooo huge it seems miles from each other.

I'd suggest you take him on a trip on a double decker bus just to see the town. The tube's convenient but you can get the atmosphere of the place and it just looks much better from the upstairs deck. I'm not talking about those double deck bus tours; there will be ordinary buses that you can see the place for yourself. You can get an Oyster Card for cheap travel.

You can get nice cheap meals at places like the Stockpot in Soho or in Chinatown if you like. This website tells you the last train back from anywhere.
This one can get you cheap early deals in nice restaurants. If you want to get to the shard from the West End, there's trains from Charing Cross that get you there in five minutes, unlike the underground which takes forever.

Enjoy your visit; you'll have a great time. The natives are friendly. I came here 30 years ago and have never left.

    Good night, peeps!

Sad news to relay - my mum passed away early this morning. Not unexpected but still difficult to deal with. Will be lurking for a little while x

So sorry for your loss. Even if you think you are expecting it to happen it is still a shock:(
This thread was a huge support to me when my dad passed last month.

    Had a proper indulgent evening.

Trying to convince sister and BF to make the best of living at home and not rent. They're saving for a deposit on a house but can't stand living with BF's annoying sister so are talking about renting. Trying to explain its extremely tricky to rent and save anything. They won't listen to me though. I personally wasted thousands of pounds renting. I'd have enough for a deposit now if I hadn't.

Hope they decide to stay at home while they can, there are so many downsides to renting and very few upsides. You're just basically lining someone else's pockets and helping them have an early retirement. It's soul destroying sometimes to think of how much money you could have saved. For the sake of the company of someone you don't like for a few yrs, it's worth putting up with as it sets you up for life then (unless it's an abusive situation of course)
