Pawning Computer

Hi all,

I've gotten into a bad situation where I bought a second hand car not realizing that because it was a 2.0 my insurance and tax would go through the roof, not to mention the petrol. Oh good lord, the petrol.
2.0 was just a number to me as I'm car illiterate lol.

I can get a better car that will cost me half the insurance, no tax and petrol will be WAY cheaper. But I need a £1100 deposit. Loans are a no-go at the moment as my credit score is in the crapper.

So I'm thinking of possibly pawning the most expensive item I own, my gaming PC. An Alienware Aurora gaming PC.

When I bought it, it was worth about £3500. Now I'm not looking to borrow that much. But do you think it's reasonable that I could pawn the computer and pay them back for the loan over a period of months? Would I get that much? Is this a really bad idea? Help!

Have you factored in the £1,100 as to whether you'll be 'saving' money?

It's all very well thinking that a new car will save you (say) £50 a month, but if it's effectively going to cost you £1,100 to save that £50 a month, it'll be nearly 2 years before a 'cheaper' car starts paying for itself.

  • The car will save me a minimum of £160 a month.

What car did you buy and what car are you going to get?

  • Don't forget the loss you'll make selling the car you've just bought.
  • A 2004 Toyota Avensis 2.0, I'm looking to downsize and really like the VW Up! as a small city runner. So I've priced up a 2015 VW Up! with the dealer, the monthly cost of the car payments is the same as the Avensis but everything else is a fraction of the running costs of the Avensis.

How new is the computer ?

computers tend to devalue very quickly, especially the more expensive ones

  • I will have to check when I get home. I tried posting a link but it won't let me because I'm a newbie.
