Plusnet and broadband MAC codes

Ok I had a 12 month contract that seems to have expired the end of December/ The package was for line rental and broadband. This month the bill for the broadband has tripled in price. Having spoken to them can some kind person answer the following questions?

The situation is I don't have an alternative supplier lined up at the moment and at the moment I dont have the funds to simply book another provider.

* edit * if it means I have to pay two lots of line rental and broadband fees etc. I am not adverse to changing but I am still working my way through all of the offers ideally I am looking for something like the deal I was on phone rental and unlimited for a 12 month contact for under £20 . Speed isnt an issue 10mbs is fine for me .

The sky one looks suitable but I dont mind admitting I find the way the companies advertise these products as confusing, The phone element is small my last bill was £2.28 and it is unlikely I would be able to scrape together enough to pay the 12 months line rental up front so that option for saving is sadly out.

So the situation is If I cant find a suitable deal O want to simply end the contract for both the phone and line ( I appreciate I may have to pay a 'connection' fee later when I start a new contract with a different isp etc.) I understand the rolling contract part until they have been given the relevant notice and am not disputing that

What is a MAC code and why do I need one? Why do I either have to transfer to another provider or they are insist I have to pay a £30+ fee otherwise they will not close my account surely my contract ends when I have given and served the notice period. ( I have done the 12 months)

Thanks
