Have tried to use the WD software to protect the E book, but have to buy a WD smartware pro. Tried to use Windows 7 bit locker, but it only works on Windows 7 Ultimate & above.
Have looked online and am considering using Kakasoft USB Security its free & think it seems to do what I want with out too much hassle.
Can't find any bad reports about it online.
Anyone used it or has any alternative suggestion?

What are you trying to do?0

Big Graeme is asking, as this kind of question can be answered literally, however that just opens up a different set of questions and makes new problems. If you describe the effect or result you're hoping to achieve, there is often a whole different way of getting that result faster, more easily, cheaper, etc.0

As I said in the title - I am trying to password protect the WD portable hard drive (which is at least 3 years old) to lock the hard drive to stop anyone else gaining access.0

Use TrueCrypt to create an encrypted virtual drive.

Although the guide is aimed at flash memory sticks it works just the same for portable drives. Just takes longer to create at the 'wait patiently' bit0 -
I just knew you were not talking about password protecting an ePub ;-)
I use USB Secure http://www.newsoftwares.net/usb-secure/0 -

Did you miss the whole security alert around Truecrypt?0 -

Ok how stupid am I.
No I am not trying to protect an E 'reading' book!
Its just the Hard disk drive calls the Hard drive an E Book!
Will check out your recommendations, many thanks for your advice.0 -
Nobody really knows why the original developers pulled the site, but it's secure as it ever was.http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net
WARNING: Using TrueCrypt is not secure as it may contain unfixed security issues

There's no known hack for Truecrypt, it's open source and the code has been subject to audit. Unlike, to take an example completely at random, USB Secure, where you just have to take on trust the word of the company who are selling it.0
