Now I have trovi on my system, think I've wrecked my 1 day old laptop
If you have only had the laptop a day I am guessing you haven't put much on it yet so doing a factory reset wouldn't cause any problems and will remove any nasties.

Follow details here to remove trovi

Download Media Tab from here and see what information is displayed about these video files and post the details here.

More info here about using Media Tab.

Thanks - I hope I've trovi off it now, to be honest I'm not overly computer literate but like to give things a go

    This is from media tab

I'm not sure how to, but I'll give the computer the day to see if it's ok and will decide later if I need to

    Thanks a mil

I have an old Toshiba DV recorder that records in .mov format. I spent hours trying to find free conversion software to convert to a usable format but gave up, in the end, as a last resort I just over wrote the .mov extension with .avi and it works fine on everything.

  • I've got some .mov files, and they play fine in VLC Media Player, and Windows Media Player.

    I'm thinking corrupted files.

Where have these files been for the past 7 years?
Were they on your old laptop? If so, did they previously play on it, or have you never been able to play them?
Are the mov files on your new laptop copies of the originals? If so, it might be worth simply trying to make new copies on a different USB stick or portable drive, as maybe the copying process just malfunctioned.

As stated above, VLC is normally very reliable when playing loads of different video formats.

Try installing media player classic (MPC) its freeware, no nasties and it will play almost anything in existence - it has its own array of decoding codecs built in. And its way better than windows media player all round.

No they're on a kingston usb stick, its video's a cousin took at my wedding in 2013, the photo's on it are all ok but I've never been able to watch the video's.

I thought it was just my old basic desktop, but I purchased a new HP laptop yesterday and it's the same on it.

Thanks for everyone's help though! I can get the video, albeit jumpy and not matching the sound

The speed of the usb stick may be to slow, or only running usb 1.1 if old which is to slow for the data rate causing the jumpyness.

Copy the files to the laptop hard drive and I suspect they will play smoothly as a hard drive is so much faster.

I had a problem with a .MOV file, it would freeze my laptop (win8.1). I uploaded it to youtube and it plays fine from there.
