it's a dell latutude intel core 2 running on windows 7

I was looking at moneysaving website when the laptop just closed down I don't know why. I had antivirus installed and scanned etc often

It will only start with f8 s don't know how to find out what the problem is. Not that it savvy.

Have you got a rescue disk though? Can you do a full factory reset using rescue media? (providing you have copied off everything you need from it)

the factory reset sounds good how can I do this? I don't have the rescue disk though. When I turn it on without f8 it says 'Computer unable to start do you want to restore this and do system restore?' then it automatically starts a repair and after ages gives up!
  • Point 1 - do you have any important data stored on the laptop that you would miss if it was gone?

    That depends.

If you plug in an external device (pen drive, memory card, portable HDD etc.), does the computer recognise it in Safe Mode?

yes i put in a pen drive and it recognises it

Then you can rescue all your important data, and I'd do it ASAP, if I were you.

Once you've got it all off, then you can try a repair or, failing that, a full re-install, safe in the knowledge you won't lose any important data, if things go mammaries on top.
