Currys gave me wrong TV. Now they want it back

I bought a new 40 inch TV from Currys and few days ago and after my wife set it up we realised it was not what we had ordered and paid for through Currys Reserve and Collect system. The store had given me a 48 inch TV by mistake. I phone customer services to notify them of the error as soon as we had realised.
I was told told I must stop using and return the TV to store immediately. I questioned this as I felt it was their error and they should be the ones that should be inconvenienced by it, not me. The lady I was speaking to said that if I did not do as I was told they would send bailiffs!
I was furious, as it was me that notified them of the mistake! I lost mobile reception shortly after explaining that bailiffs couldn't operate in Scotland.
I turned to twitter to vent my frustration and seemed to be getting somewhere when they offered to send someone to my house to exchange the products. By this stage as was thinking I should just keep the TV and I suggested this to the customer services rep on Twitter who agreed that this would be acceptable.
Today she contacted me to say that I must exchange the products or pay the difference.
Any thoughts?

If it was the other way around, IE you ordered a 48" TV and they gave you a 40" TV - Would you be happy if they turned around and washed their hands of the matter?
Accept their offer for them to come around and exchange and then move on.

You and curries both played a part in the error... them in handing you the wrong tv and you not checking they had given you what you paid for.....who doesn't check!
Anyway you can keep it but only if your prepared to pay the difference if not return it to them for an exchange.0 -
I would have thought it you ordered a 40 inch TV and a box arrived with a big 48 inch on the box, would have been a clue it was the wrong size0

I wouldn't moan too much about Currys on here, they'll take your thread down, like they did with mine!"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0

Think about your actions logically:
1. you contact Currys to report the wrong TV. This sets the possible "item needs returning" ball in motion
2. You get an allegedly rude woman on the phone (we can't realistically say that you were a complete angel and she was a complete devils) who advises to send it back. People can be rude, and making a slight generalisation but scottish people can sometimes come across a bit irritating too.
3. Nevertheless, you contacted another person to solve point 2 and did this via twitter.
4. you were offered a service whereby someone came to pick it up, presumably free of charge, so that a replacement or refund could be made. This is in line with your desired resolution in point 1
5. You change your mind after getting the ball rolling and opt to keep the TV, to which you are correctly advised to pay the difference
6. You ask for our thoughts on all of this, presumably with a feeling that you may be entitled to keep it or compensation for the hassle. Keeping the TV could have been achieved by not doing number 1, and the proposed solutions mean that you are not unnecessarily out of pocket for their mistake. Therefore, I do not understand why you need our thoughts on the matter0 -

Funny thing is, I suspect that is exactly what Currys would do.0 -

And then you would take them through the small claims court just like currys mentioned to the OP if he didn't return the TV.0 -

Nope.
Managers hate stock discrepancies. Doesn't matter if you're up or down, Loss Prevention Services notice during audits and counts and your store will likely end up on a list as one not following correct procedures.
Being promoted to bigger stores don't just mean keeping the revenue flowing and the place looking nice, if you can't keep a accurate stock file because you don't enforce procedures you're doomed.0 -
I read this post as: Currys messed up and now I want a freebie...0

Nail on the head.
OP, do the adult thing and just let Currys replace it for the TV you ordered.Thinking critically since 1996....0
