I appreciate what you say but I went over all this both with my wife & together with my dentist. For me the best thing would be a dental implant. These forums are about bargains & to try to get a good item cheaper, that is why I am asking on these forums. If anyone has had this treatment, & they are happy, I would like to look into the dentist they used. Many times in my life I have found things that are cheaper are sometimes better as well. I know that is not always the case but often it is, if you look around.

We don't know where you live, so if someone has had treatment in Scotland and you live in Cornwall............it's a long way for you to travel.;)

Implant treatment takes a long time, which gives you time to save up. The Dental Implantology person you choose may take payments in instalments, which could be the way forward for you.

I could recommend someone in East Yorkshire and other members might have recommendations for their area............so tell us which county you live in.

Toothsmith is right though, you should get the referral from your dentist and not be swayed by cheap prices.

If you are a smoker, it's less likely that an implant will be offered.

OP said this has been discussed with own dentist - and implant was recommended as best option. So we can probably assume all the basics like this have been covered.

But yes - an idea of the area you're in would probably be helpful for recommending anyone!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

West country. However I realise I might have to travel if a good lower priced one is recommended.
    Nice to save.

    Hi,
have you tried any university or dental schools near you ? sometimes they ask for volunteers for treatment by undergraduate dental students or dental hygiene and dental therapy students, as part of the students’ clinical education.. might be worth a ring around, particularity if its an implant you need ( as I'm sure they bite your hand off ! - no pun intended)
I know the university near me is offering cheap dental implants; my dentist recommended it to me, but I'm going for two crowns instead now ( chickened out of implant).
Re trainees at university don't worry they have experts with them and its covered by insurance etc. Just a thought ? x

    Won't work I'm afraid.

Teaching hospitals are under very tight budgets too, and implants are not taught to undergraduates in any detail. The only implants done at dental hospitals will be ones that fit the very VERY strict criteria for them on the NHS.

Dentists have to fund their implant training themselves - which is one reason that they are expensive - the training costs have to be recouped afterwards.

Dentists often have to bring suitable patients to training courses though - so the possibility of a slightly cheaper one exists there. But if I was doing that, then the patient I would select to take would be a long standing patient who I wanted to 'do a favour' for - maybe even a staff member who needed one. Not someone who just rocked up off the streets.

  • HI,
Nice to know my dentist was "doing me a favour" by offering me this form of treatment i.e. going to the university. Sorry I didn't know it wasn't offered to everyone. Apologies.
  • How do you know whether they are good or not?

The dentist where I go has just been took over and are now promoting themselves as implant clinic.

On Tuesday my tooth snapped with enough of the tooth still sticking out the gum. I went to the dentist on friday and its the tooth that has already been root canaled.

The tooth next to it is already out so now have a gap of two teeth.

They took an x-ray and covered the bit of tooth that is sticking out and Ive an appointment next week to discuss.

    1) Redo root canal
    2) Bridge across the two
    3) Two implants

Not sure what to do - also this is now a new dentist

I'm in north west (formby southport area)

Friend of mine used Evodental a few years ago, did an excellent job and were significantly cheaper than others.

Some people go to Hungary for implants - there's loads of newspapers articles about this - have a google. Apparently the dentists there are very good - they just don't expect a 6 figure salary.

The average monthly wage in Hungary is around €500. The average monthly wage in the UK for comparison in euros is €2700. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_countries_by_average_wage

How affordable do you think implant therapy is to the average Hungarian?

How much saving do you think will be made with an implant needing multiple visits of a course of months?

What relevance has that got to whether it's a good option for the OP?

Apparently quite a lot. Flights and hotels are cheap. And you can have a holiday at the same time. Even with a bone graft you might only need 2 visits (Evodental did my friend in 2 visits and no followup was necessary), and some do the initial consultation in the UK.

I did look into this with my friend a few years ago - if it had been me I'd have gone to Hungary but then I like travelling anyway. He isn't a confident traveller so he had it done here.

Though it's probably more worth it if you need several implants.
