swapping bank accounts - cash back

my son is with RBS but as there isnt a bank close by it might be wise to swap over to a bank that has one in his village.

Is there a bank or building society that are giving cash incentives at the moment to swap your account with them. Obviously he wouldneed an account for his wages to be paid into and require a debit card etc.

Im sure Halifax was giving £150 at one point.

But why does he need a branch in his village?

    * Via their refer a friend scheme (referrer also gets £50), and boosted to £125 if combined with a cashback site.

For the Halifax one, there is also £40 cashback on top through Quidco at the moment.

Martin's impartial guides seldom give prominence to cashback sites as it would hurt MSE's referral income ;)

And £42 with Co-op through Topcashback.

why not? is there an issue with not having a bank close by so you dont have to call them or do online banking? Just saying like.

I choose my bank (or banks...I have several!) for the benefits it offers. If the benefit of a branch is more important than interest rates, free travel insurance, cashback on debit card spending, etc, etc, then he needs a branch in the village.

The only reason I can think of for needing counter facilities on a regular basis is for paying (large amounts of) cash in. And even then, with many account providers you can use the Post Office.

You and I both, and a local Branch doesn't figure on our benefits list because we can't see any measurable benefit in being able to walk into a local, or any, Branch. Nor can we see a need for having to do so often, or even ever. But hey, others may perceive different benefits and needs.

A lot of banks now have counter service at the Post Office including RBS.

Although not much use if you don't have a PO either.

My local HSBC closed a year ago and I've been with them since 2002. I switched to Halifax this week because there's one in my (small) town where I both live and work - because having a branch is a benefit to me. Obviously I chose Halifax over the Nat West or Barclays here because of the switching bonus etc, but after getting cash for Christmas and still having it lying around because I haven't been anywhere near an HSBC to pay it in, I decided it was finally time to switch. For many people having a branch is still important!

If he lives in a village surely the question should be "Does the bank in his village give incentives?" followed quickly by "How long will it be there?"
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
