How can I prove LL is re-selling electric?

How do I go about proving such a thing? I have a coin meter installed (was here when I moved in) and everything was ok with it. Put in about £10 a week (2 bedroom flat)
He came in, and we suspected he 'turned' the meter up when he emptied the coin meter. Our suspicions were correct following a conversation with his girlfriend.
We have been living here for 14months now and he has always refused to show us a bill for our property.
He last emptied it on the 19th December and the meter box is near enough full so he will need to come out to collect the money, but in the past 14months, he has only emptied it twice. So we know that the money in there is way way over.
I have no idea who our supplier is. I've been online to try and figure out how to go about this.
I have plans to move, but while that is happening, I cannot afford to pay in upwards of £25 a week.
I just need to be able to prove he is doing this, then involve who ever I need to.
Thanks

  • Also, can I change my supplier? Like pay direct debit monthly til I leave with out the LL consent?
Because I have 2 children and am fed up of not ever being able to have 'emergency' on my electric.
Would I have to ring him and ask permission?

it is colder in winter and you use more lighting etc. So you will use more. You could just ask what the tariff is set at.

When I worked for the SEB Contracting we were changing out all the meters for key versions. We was making a fortune selling on the old coin meters to land lords.

You must have known about the coin meter.

    Contact the electricity supplier.

Ask them to put the account into your name, remove the coin meter, and send you bills in future.
  • Oh yes, I have taken into consideration the colder weather etc, but from knowledge the coin meter box holds around £200 when full. And it is nearly full. With the girlfriend stating he has put it up, its all very concerning.
Stupidly I haven't 'counted' every £1 we have put in. Which I'm kicking myself for. But we have started when I remembered, and in 6 days, we have put in £23. Which still, I find excessive

Could I not get into trouble by changing it over? He has said before that I am not allowed to and that he doesn't have to show me no bills for this property. I am young, this is one of the first flats I have ever rented. So it's all a bit to much for me at the moment

The meter should have an indicator on the front showing the unit charge usually shown as units per coin. If you are in a dodgy house conversion there is the probability that there is only one proper meter for the property and you are on a private sub meter so you will not be able to change supplier. The LL, by law, must provide you with the price he is charging per unit and provide you with evidence that he is not charging you more than he is paying for it.
  • On my meter , I have tried to find out the price per unit, but have no idea what I am looking for :(
It's starting to stress me out! Because when I asked him for a bill before, then to count the money I paid in, he refused and said he wouldn't empty the meter so then I would have no electric. Which I can't do with my children. I have gone around and turned off everything apart from what I'm using at that moment. I don't even have the heating on at all during the day, only a half hour at night for the children. I woke up this morning and there was no electric (again) so I put £2 in at 7.34am and its already gone down to £1.80. I have a lamp on and my T.V (on my phone for this site)
I am moving, but it is going to take me a while to save up to go. So I feel stuck. I'm stressing out so much, I have been so skint that I have even thought about breaking the box ya know? Just to put a few quid in there again to help me. I work all the hours I can around the children. I have no family where I am. And I feel like because of this bloody LL, I'm going to have to be here longer with the amount of money I am giving him!

clearly you already realise that it is unlawful to charge more than the actual cost for the supply of electricity and/or gas so I'm not sure what else you want from us

at the end of the day it is down to you to take legal action against your LL if he refuses to behave, the regulator will not do it for you

I assume you have read these ?
