Broadband when renting for 6 months...

Hi All,
My dad has just sold his house and is renting while trying to find another. He has just moved into a place and has an initial 6 month contract. He hopes to have sorted out buying somewhere within that time.
But he wants a landline and broadband. Everywhere seems to be 12 month+ contracts though. How does this work for people who rent short term?
Can he take the contract with him when he moves?
Or will he just have to pay the extra 6 months off?
Are there one month broadband contracts available anymore?
Thanks!
