The best bet is to use hotelscombined.com to find the best price from the hotel sites and then go to cashback and get it direct...

Compares all in one place easily...

There's two typical occasions where you cant use Hotels.com discount codes

    1) Where you are paying the hotel direct. Hotels.com have relatively recently started doing bookings where you pay the hotel. In this case they can't offer the discount because all payment is between you and the hotel directly.

    2) Big chains. Most chain hotels are excluded because the brand have strict pricing controls. This is usually because the brand themselves offer a "Best Rate Guarantee" via their own sites so the contract with Hotels.com (and other) will exclude them from underselling. This list of chains that do this is quite impressive.

I suspect the email they sent you would have had T&C's somewhere, or at least a link to them. I always do a "dummy" booking when using hotels.com right up to the point you enter the code to double check if it works for a particular hotel.

It's No. 1 in my case as you've identified. The T&C's I now see were in the page link from the voucher where it stated "Most major chains are excluded. See full list here.". I never went to that link because I knew it wasn't a chain hotel so I was unaware of any condition that referred to pay at hotel bookings being exempt.

Yes that's the thing, though cashback is never guaranteed.

I went through TCB today, getting 8%, the hotel price, then had a 10% code applied to it.

I tried that a few months back at TCB and the cashback was rejected by hotels.com but I got the 10%

I saw these discounts when I was booking hotels for work. It's not worth it for a 10% discount, if you collect the Welcome Rewards and intend to use them then it's definitely not worth it, and hotels.com is very reliable for paying out cashback to Quidco, usually at 12 or 15% so an even better 'discount'.

If they had a 20% off voucher or above it may be worth it

If I book 10 nights, surely it is better to have the 10% coupon applied rather than the free night? It equates to the same, but I have the money?

The discount's better on it's own because you have to pay VAT or local tax on the "free" room.

But if you've used TopCashback or Quidco you usually forfeit the cashback as well as the free night if you use a discount code.

Cashback plus free night usually has more value than 10% discount.

As a B&B owner we always offer the best price if a guest phones or emails us direct. A lot of small hotels will have discretion to offer you a favourable rate if you phone them direct as they are not paying commission to 'hotels.com' or 'Trivago' etc. Only a suggestion - might be worth more than the 10 or 20% vouchers you may have - most small hotels would rip your arm off for a 2 week stay booked direct with them rather than through a booking agent :-)
  • Hotels.com is quite often cheaper than going with hotels direct. I agree with what has been said above that you get the best value by using Cashback + Welcome rewards, simply because they can be combined.

Don't forget to make sure you get a refund as well if the price drops by using Checkmyhotelprice.com
  • So I was lucky on my October trip? I used a 10% code (from vouchercodes) got the rewards nights and also the cash on TCB
