ipod touch connection to internet

Hi all,

I'm sure you're all going to think I'm a right numpty, but hoping someone can explain things to me.

I have a 15 year old. I bought him an ipod touch for xmas. He's never been interested in using our laptop or game systems and this was the only thing he asked for for xmas, so it wasn't a hard choice.

I thought he wasn't using it at all as he hasn't used the laptop to download music onto the ipod (which is what his older brother thought he'd do) and hasn't asked for the internet password.

Yesterday I took him to sign up at college for September. He told the college tutor that he'd been accessing facebook and twitter on his ipod touch. They gave him a QR code to access their facebook page.

My questions are- doesn't he need the internet password to access the internet on his ipod touch? Is he using someone else's internet? Is there another way to download music to the ipod touch rather than using our laptop? And the big question is What can an ipod touch actually do?
I love a bargain. Now mortgage and debt free. hurray!!:smileyhea

iPod touch is basically an iPhone without the phone part

He can download purchased music via iTunes direct from the iPod but any of his CDs need to be ripped on iTunes on a PC or laptop and loaded via iTunes directly

He needs a network key for each wifi he connects to unless it's a free "open" network, your wifi key is normally on the back of your wireless router or on a pullout card on the router, any intelligent youngster would just go down and access the key without asking

...and hasn't asked for the internet password.
He's either looked on the back of the router, someone else has given it to him, or he's taken it from the laptop.
  • Ok. We changed our password ages ago as the eldest thought other people were using our internet and it's not written down anywhere he could find it. He's not been once on the laptop.

At this point I'm going to assume someone near me has open internet he can access.

So once he's on the internet can he do the same as on a laptop?

    Why not just ask him?

    Probably an incorrect assumption.

The Touch accesses Internet through WiFi. Doesn't have to be your Wifi. Anywhere your son can get connected to a WiFi network, he can access the Internet.

Your password only controls your router, not anyone else's. but, as said above, if your son looks on the back of your router, unless you've changed it, the wireless key will usually be there. Does your eldest know it? Did he share it?

I have an iPod touch. It has access to my wireless system at home and I did initially need to enter the password. However i now use it wherever Wifi is freely available or enter the required password if available. With iTunes i usually buy via my laptop first but could do it directly from the Ipod.

Why on earth would you do that? Just buy it straight off iTunes store straight onto the iPod. The days of tethering iPods to iTunes on a computer are long gone.

Why don't you just ask him? The answers are no (he could go to Starbucks, for example), yes (but it might be Starbucks), yes, and "it's a small iPad".

But you live in the same house, for God's sake. Just talk to him.

    Or the 'eldest' told him.
