One of the downpipes had a big split in it due to rusting and this had been "repaired" by having a piece of masking tape put over it and then painted with black Hammerite paint so it blended in nicely.
It was fine until it rained and the masking tape got wet on the inside and promptly became unstuck from the pipe leaving water running down the outside.
A professional would have used gaffer tape...
  • Went look at a flat and it had a beautiful garden with rockery and pond. The lounge alcoves had beautiful shelving in which had obviously been made to measure. Curtain rails and blinds on all front facing windows.
When I moved in the garden was a pile of earth, the alcoves were empty and every rail and blind had been ripped down (you could see the craters in the wall where the fixings had been).
They had even taken every light bulb and the toilet roll holder. Everything that could be removed had been.
I think I cried for week.
The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.
  • I know someone who even took the wallpaper, I never could get it to stick in the new house.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • Because we did not want to buy the carpets the owners ripped them up and left all the carpet tacks, we had 2 toddlers so they could not walk anywhere until we'd pulled them up, which took ages. Went to cook dinner and the oven did not work. Dripping taps in the kitchen and bathroom. Loads of junk left in garage and loft. Outside tap that you couldnt fit a hose into, as it was too close to the wall. Kitchen cupboards filthy. Took all lightbulbs and toilet roll holders.

OP - did you specifically ask the vendor if everything in the property was in good working order, and if anything needed repair?

Its a basic question, but solicitors don't seem to ask it!!

OP. get that house checked out asap! I've seen some houses after BIYers have lived there! Electric wiring running under the bath . . . All of the legally-required fire protection measures removed from the garage . . .

You may be able to sue the previous owners for compensation.

Why did you not tell us that things didn't work? Not obvious things, but hidden things that we would only find about after we lived here?

    1) wrong fuses fitted, so underfloor heating didn't work when it turned colder.
    2) boiler programmer that is only wired to work with both heating and hot water on together?
    3) thermostat that doesn't work and now we find out that it was disconnected.
    4) window fitted with no outside sill (only found out when scaffolding up this week) not sure if surveyor could see this.
    5) conservatory built over boundary line, despite reassuring us it wasn't.
    6) covering shed with roofing felt while viewing, to hide the fact it was full of holes and timbers rotten. Couldn't see inside as full of stuff.
    7) leaving drain full of rubble.
    8) no electrical certificate despite promises, which we will now have to sort and pay for (probably uncovering more problems)
    9) boiler pump stuck.
This is just some of the problems so far.

Vent over. Hoping to feel better soon.

Sounds like you need to talk to your solicitor about get some money form the seller for the repairs. No 5 is a major problem - though sounds like your neighbour is letting it go
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring
  • I agree with the above, what does your solicitor say about this?
    Thinking critically since 1996....
