I agree. The snobbery against Spoons is just that, snobbery. That they provide excellent value for good honest food.
Particularly for those of us who aren't prepared to, or cannot afford to pay restaurant prices.
You know exactly what you are going to be getting, and they make no pretence to be anything that they are not.
Their success speaks for itself.. I, for one, can say that, for the price, their food is as good as any you will find in the same price bracket. Also, elsewhere, you will be paying much higher prices for the drink with your meal.
Couldn't agree more we have a lovely local one with pleasant staff and food is good value for money.0 -
The portions of chips are tiny in my local spoons. There are a few other pubs in my home town that sell cheaper food and reasonably priced drinks. The prices of some of the meals are eye watering as far as Im concerned.
A local restaurant sells a 3 course lunch for 9.50, massive portions and home cooked food.
Wetherspoon also use workfare, certainly not the only company that does so, zero hour contracts as well.0 -
It's worth going to a Wetherspoons on their special days e.g. Tuesday Steak, Thursday curry etc. because you get a drink included and you can have a pint of Devils Backbone IPA, which is a very good beer (try it). However imho they serve it a bit too cold......0

We have a good one in Washington,Tyne & Wear last friday was " fish friday" a large potion of cod in a crispy batter, chips and mushy or garden peas.£6.45 plus a free pint! very good value, the place is always clean and the staff pleasant

This is another thing that annoys me. Cod. In this area of the country, we have always had Haddock - purely because we are a fishing port and historically have always sent the lower quality fish elsewhere (cod) and kept the best for ourselves (Haddock). We don't like eating fish with worms.
And Wetherspoons seem to have this weird impression that they can stick cod on the menu here, then wonder why people never EVER order it!
One of my friends is a manager at Wetherspoons and doesn't understand it either.
"It's like going to Beijing and serving up chicken chow mein and prawn crackers"
It's simply stupid.I can't add up.0 -

Scottish Spoons use Haddock. (or they did the last time I was in one)0 -

..It's probably more the fact that sometimes the serving is so small that the chips aren't close to eachother on the plate.I can't add up.0 -
I'v e been to several branches and if there's steak or burger been ordered you literally get 10 chips. Thats a child's portion, doesnt seem greedy to me to want a few more.
Anyway i still like going, not fussed on chips myself its the men in the party that always moan. You're not your * could have not of * Debt not dept *0 -
I had five bean chilli with a side order of chips on Friday from Spoons in Tamworth. There were plenty of chips, my friend had to help me eat them.0

When I order chips as a side the portion is a fair size, it's the specials that have a smaller amount of chips.
no v wraps or burritos on the menu in my 5 locals
getting a bit fed up with the same old veggie choices, time for something different I hope.0 -
I don't mind the Ashby one as the Villa Maria wine is as cheap as the supermarket. Hardly ever eat there though, the menu doesnt do anything for me.0
