OVO Transfer

I'm with OVO, can you transfer to another cheaper OVO rate without being charged there exit fee?

I believe that the £30 per fuel is a tariff exit fee but why not e-mail hello@ovoenergy.com and ask? Please post their response.

  • Generally speaking I would expect that like most suppliers they would allow you to extend to a longer term contract with no fee. I'd ask, if they do try and charge a fee see if you can negotiate it off. A lot of suppliers will waive a few rather than loose a customer completely.

I had this conversation with Ovo and they were insistent that I had to stick with the terms offered when I entered the contract.

You might like to run this one past them. It is taken from a bill that I downloaded today:

Early Termination Fees: £30.00 per fuel should you decide to terminate your contract by switching your energy supply to another supplier before the contract end date.

Remember they have had a lot of new staff in CS to meet increasing customer numbers. The above is not quite the same as switching tariffs and staying with Ovo.

They said their T&C say I have to pay the fine!!
    10. Cancelling your contract early

10.1. If you’re not switching, you can still end your Fixed Plan contract early by letting us know 28 days before you want the contract to end. You’ll have to pay us a Termination Fee. By law, you’ll automatically move onto a contract for our variable Simpler Energy plan at the end of the 28 days, unless you’re switching (see clause 10.2 below).

10.2. If you’re switching, you don’t need to tell us yourself - your new supplier will contact us to cancel your contract on your behalf under Ofgem rules. If you’re on a Fixed Plan, you’ll have to pay us a Termination Fee.

...I had a similar conversation last April with OVO even before my switch from EDF was completed -they brought out a slightly cheaper fix but refused to let me switch to this cheaper one. As I would only have saved ~ £25 pa I let it lie. In the event I moved to EON early Dec. and the savings for the Summer and mild Winter would have been insignificant fortunately:T

My contract ends in May 2015, I will be looking to move to other supplier in April 2015.

I posed the question to OVO. This was their response:

Thanks for your email, I have forwarded your comments on the wording on our statements onto our Customer Thoughts and Feedback team. To clarify, we charge the £30 per fuel leaving fee if a customer switched to another supplier. If a customer was fixed into a 12 month contract with us, and our rates changed after the cool off period, the could sign-up again to get the new rates, but would be applicable for the leaving fees on their old account. This is because we take a new customer on, we buy our energy in advance to cover their usage for the next 12 months.

If their prices went up, would you be happy if they tore up the 1 year fixed rate/term contract without penalty too, it's only another 4 months before you'll probably get a cheaper deal anyway.

Whoever you jump to will have a similar policy.
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand
