The AA-Iberia connection is on a single booking and they're both OW airlines - doesn't that make a difference seeing as they booked that connection?

The trouble is AA isn't covered by EC261 but Iberia is. If it's AA's fault you miss the connection, Iberia will therefore most likely deny any claim you make. This is a grey area and I don't know whether you actually would be entitled to it or not (they'll know more on the flight delay board here, but it may be a case of having to test it in court), but either way, Iberia will likely hold the opinion that you aren't entitled and not allow it.

You don't need to worry about your US connection though - you'll definitely be taken to Madrid either way, it's the Madrid connection that's the issue. You've left a decent amount of time though, so I wouldn't worry too much over this!

The regulation only concerns the operating carrier, it's irrelevant who issued the ticket or whether or not it's a codeshare flight. For example you can be flying on a ticket issued by a non-EU carrier into LHR and be covered, or you could be flying on an EU carrier issued ticket on the same route and not be covered.

If Iberia is operating the US-MAD flight you're covered by EC261 on that leg, if it's operated by AA you're not.

Is there any particular reason why you didn't book the direct MAD-BOG flight that Iberia operates, it would save you a lot of faffing around, and ensure that you were covered for the entire trip by EU261

!!!!!!? They have a direct flight? Because it never came up on ITA Matrix, Skyscanner, Kayak, Google Flights, etc...

EDIT: Ignore that - I'm misreading their .es site. I think the actual reason is that it costs 50% extra.
