Cheap Sun Tan Lotion

I'm going on holiday in just over a week to South Africa.

I was wondering if anyone knew where to get cheap sun tan lotion at this time of year. It's so expensive in Boots and Superdrug. I do have some left over from another year, but I know it degrades over time.

I really don't want to pay £15 for a single bottle of own brand sun tan lotion!

Or do you think it's best waiting till I get to South Africa and use my old one until I buy it?

Try Savers I usually buy from there or B&M stores.

I bought a load of Boots Soltan for my recent trip to South America. It was on BOGOF, and I think it still is. There's not much around in most stores at this time of year, but you can order online to collect in store.

I can heartily recommend the stuff from Aldi. It is around £3 a bottle and works splendidly. We are lucky enough to get a sunshine break three or four times a year and I have had good experience with their suntan cream.

It is still in stock at my local branch.

I like the once a day stuff, especially for my kiddies, and I've found the calypso one (can be found in home bargains) spf40 once a day to be every bit as good as P20. And the consistency is easier to work with. I will definitely be buying more when we go to the Canaries at Easter.

I noticed my local Tesco Express had sun cream today, I thought it was an odd thing to see at this time of year for such a small store.

Tesco Direct have a lot of sun cream on the site at reasonable prices (their own brand and big brand) which can be delivered to your local store for free the next day.

As benjus Boots Soltan is BOGOF (is on their website anyway)

Sainsbury's own sun tan lotion gets very good reports for uv protection etc and is much cheaper than Boots Soltan.

Boots do a 200ml F50 lotion with insect repellent for £10.00 and - as benjus says it's BOGOF right now - so you're paying £5.00 per bottle not £15.

Sun protection is something I will not skimp on.
Boots Soltan has 5 star UVA protection. A lot of more expensive makes don't have 5 stars.

You are right that suncream does lose efficiency over time but there should be a sign on your bottle like a pot with an open lid.
At the side of this there will be something like '18M' which means it should be used or discarded 18 months after opening.

I'd never trust being able to get the right suncream for me in another country.

The U.S. is fine to buy it in. Walgreens is cheap and if you're near a Target their own brand stuff is even cheaper. I burn very easily but have found that you can spf 70 there. I like the aerosol spray cans in the US too as they spray as a mist not like the rubbish ones we get here.

As for buying it here, I recommend avoiding Hawaiin Tropic even when it's on offer as it's awful to absorb into your skin. Soltan and Nivea absorb well, Superdrug own brand I found didn't.

Anywhere is fine for buying suncream - it's not a uniquely British product! They just seem to be unnecessarily fussy over which type they'll use (not that there's anything wrong with that).
