Mobile Phone contract refused

I have just tried to sign up for a new mobile phone contract and I have been refused.
I am 59 years old, don't have a mortgage, and have never purchase anything on credit and have always paid my credit card bill immediately. I have had the same bank account for 40 years.
Could this refusal be because I don't have any credit history?
Incidentally I currently have a contract with the phone company which has refused me?

If you have a contract phone already and a credit card, then you do have some credit history.
Have you moved recently? Are you on the electoral roll?
Get a copy of your three credit reports (equifax, experian, call credit) and see if there is anything inaccurate on there.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
You say you don't have a credit history but your credit card account should show on your credit file (unless it has been open for a very long time), even if it doesn't show use of the card if you are paying before the statement is generated. And your current phone contract should show on your credit file.
If you are a homeowner then it would also be fairly likely you may have credit accounts showing for some utility company.
Have you actually checked a copy of your credit file with any of the credit reference agencies to see what it shows?
Have you had a recent change of address?
Presumably you have made all payments on time with the current phone contract? and have applied at the same address as the one used for that account?
I'd start by getting a copy of your noddle credit file (because its free) to check there is no incorrect information on it.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

Can I ask if this was Virgin Mobile. Currently having a similar problem with them.0

Can you not contact them an appeal their decision?
To be honest I'm not sure if that's possible but I know you can do it with credit cards.

Company is O2.
I have tried to contact the credit dept but they won't discuss it on the phone. The usual Data Protection C**p! It will take 5 days to get a response.0 -

What information appears on your credit report? You may also want to check the other CRAs.
Just name and address, age etc on the noodle. Not really interested in paying out for credit reports. If O2 don't want to give me a credit for 20 quid a month on a new contract I will stick with what I have.0 -
