Autonet Insurance Debt Collectors.. ADVICE PLEASE

Hi, I'm new to the forum so sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place.
I would really appreciate some help regarding the following:
My partner took out insurance on his truck with Autonet insurance.
it only cost about £35 a month. They couldn't take the money out his bank one month as there wasn't enough in there. He then had a letter saying they couldnt take payment and ignored it, he has subsequently got more letters from them (with additional charges) and has completely ignored them. I paid £70 into his bank which i thought was to pay his now £68 insurance bill, but instead he spent it. As a result they transferred the debt to a debt collection agency (Lion Debt Recovery) he has now had numerous letters from them and today i found a final notice letter ripped up and in the bin with a total debt of £176.49 and said if he doesn't pay they will take court action.
He had kept all this from me and i only found out because i saw this last letter in the bin so had a look for others.
I don't know why he is ignoring them! he owes them money so i'm guessing theyre well within their right to persue him.
I was wondering if Lion Debt Recovery are safe to pay? I dont want to pay, then have them frequently take more money from my bank. i don't want to, but, i'm going to pay off his debt as it stresses me out. I dont want a surprise visit from them demanding money.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou

What's he doing about insurance now? As his insurance policymay not exist.
The policy came with a credit agreement so yes he can obtain a CCJ from none payment.
You/he needs to get it all sorted as there are lots of issues going on here which can 'ruin' his current life and credit if not resolved.0 -
thankyou so much for your reply. i am furious with him for this and fail to see how he couldn't pay £35!
I don't think he has any insurance.. he doesn't drive the vehicle at the moment and gets a lift from his dad if he needs to go somewhere.0 -
Lion debt recovery have, according to the first page of a google search taken unauthorised money from someones account following them paying. You could call and ask them for their details to do a bank transfer- to protect your bank details, alternatively you could send them a cheque.
You need to check that he still has insurance if he is still driving the van around. You also need to ensure that it is going to be paid, otherwise this will happen again.
Also, this behaviour would start ringing alarm bells to me- and I suspect that your partner has other debts he hasn't told you about. Sit him down and discuss it, and get help from CAB or similar, he can't keep burying his head in the sand.0 -

Check! If the vehicle is on a public road it must be insured and taxed or you'll get a much heftier fine.
Also, if he still has the insurance policy and isn't paying that will cause issues- cancelling a policy doesn't mean you stop paying immediately.0 -
Thankyou everyone for your speedy replies. They are greatly appreciated!!
I have transferred the money to them and will make him phone them and Autonet to tell them the payment has been made.
I will sit him down when he comes home and discuss it as this cannot happen again. I'll find out if he has insurance but im pretty sure he doesnt.
I don't know if the accumulated debt includes other months insurance as well as charges.
I really hope now i've paid this is the end of it.0 -
If its uninsured has he parked it off the road and SORN'd it?
If not ecpect more fines from the DVLA next time. It must be taxed and insured or parked off the highway and SORN'd.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
If it's on a public road without insurance then not only is it an offence, but it could end up being towed and crushed. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Plus he's most likely had the insurance cancelled, so will now have to declare that for ever, and accept he'll be paying higher premiums - not just for motor insurance either0
-
Yes it's sorn and parked on private property. They did cancel his policy and I hope by having to pay higher premiums it will teach him to take responsibility.0
