How many people knew they would have to have the money available in their bank to pay by Debit Card?..... .

Maybe it's just me but I'd have thought that fell into the "bleedin' obvious" category. However you pay - cheque, debit card, direct debit - the money needs to be in a current account. Surely you weren't planning to stick it on a credit card were you?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Not really, I've opened savings accounts, including ISAs and fixed rate bonds, where you get the opportunity to transfer funds within a certain time frame.

Perhaps the articles encouraging panic buying didn't help.

The website says they anticipate the product being available for weeks not days. They may be wrong of course ...

Confirmation page showed as Internal Server Error, but the authorisation from a Nationwide debit card did go through. No confirmation email/online registration confirmation though (so may not be showing as "completed" their end).

If George Osborne says there's plenty to go round, what would you do? ;)

Martin Lewis was on BBC News 24, saying it will run out quick.

Hmm, I need 4 working days to get money from an ISA into my current account.

However, the NS&I brochure says: "You can invest from £500 up to £10,000 in each Issue of each term. You can buy more than one Bond, as long as the total amount you invest in each term isn’t more than £10,000."

So, perhaps the best way is to put liquid cash into one bond immediately, then wait a day or so to see how the takeup is proceeding (£270M by Thurs afternoon), then predict if it's likely to last for 4 more days, then get the money and buy another bond.

In another sphere, if there are worries about fuel shortage, the prediction of panic buying guarantees that it will indeed happen, as there is more spare empty volume in car fuel tanks than fuel in all forecourts.

How many people are on the MSE mailing list?

I don't know the best way to organise it. Maybe they should ballot it if oversubscribed, like in some share flotations.

The website looks ok at the moment though.

Got exactly the same last night when helping father apply. problem is he doesn't have internet banking so we've not been able to see if the money was debited or not. Can't get through on the phone to NS&I. Have you heard any more?

I have been trying to apply without success. On the rare occasion that I got beyond 'apply' and entered my details, I got a message that JavaScript needed to be enabled. What? I'm pretty sure I have that.

Clicking on the 'help' (ha ha) link to find out about enabling JavaScript produces a Page Not Found.
I gave it a rest and tried successfully later.

I think the message about JavaScript is intended as a holding message while the form generates, except that when I first tried NSandI's system timed out. :(

They are saying the application is likely to be cancelled and the funds returned.

The money was removed from an interest bearing account and no mention was made of plans to make good that loss whilst the funds are in limbo (I'd guess they'd be back by Wednesday at the earliest, that's if they've sorted out the mess in their database and actually processed the refund).

FWIW I'm hearing this "Internal Server Error" has happened to quite a few people.
