I've had cars with screaming wheel bearings pass the MoT. I've had bearings with play that make no noise and bearings with no play make a noise under load. The only foolproof way to find a faulty wheelbearing is to drive hard round a left and right hand bend. Then at least you will know if its wheel bearing or not and which side.

I took the car in for a second opinion at another garage which was recommended and they confirmed that the pulleys failed on the power steering and I need a new power steering pump. They have quoted me around £300 for the part and about £100 to fit it

Same here - not all wheel bearings are the same.
My Passat has a hell of a drone on the front, but no play and quiet when spun - as they're not loaded.


Nicole - Is there no option for a secondhand or recon pump?
Hopefully yours isn't just low on fluid and you're having your pants pulled down
