  • Wouldn't have thought its that if its making that noise whilst stationary.

That will be the air con assembly making that noise.

    Why?
You must have a good reason if second guessing ops professional opinion who has seen the car.

Plus, a failed compressor doesn't necessarily need replacing let alone make a noise. They Free spin when disengaged.

My good reason is that the heavy steering would be a give away if the compressor had failed thus lacking low speed steering assistance.

I've already checked that but it isn't that, which is what I initially thought it was

How did you check the wheel bearing? You can only check it on load; not by jacking up the car and spinning the wheel.

How could a stationary car possibly generate that noise from a wheel bearing?
It is clearly related to engine speed and could be anything driven by that belt. I'd be probing the area (safely!) with a long handled screwdriver acting as a stethoscope to narrow it down and making sure power steering reservoir is topped up, etc..

You can check a wheel bearing quite easily that way.

You seriously don't know how to check a wheel bearing?

I know but it seems maybe welfayre doesn't. I was asking how does he check a whell bearing with the wheel jacked up? Impossible. All you can check for is play. That is totally different to the buzz you get at high speed, under load, going round an opposing bend which indicates the bearing has gone and before long your wheel may literally fall off! (yes I have been around long enough to know people this has happened to)

It's not impossible. You answered the question yourself, check for play. You can also rotate the wheel by hand, give it got hard spin and you'll hear it. MOT testers will put " o/s/r wheel bearing rough when rotating" as a failure or something along that line. Do you really think they all go out for a drive around the town to check the bearings?? Nope it's up on the ramp and given a spin.

I've lost count of the amount of times someone's come in saying "I think a bearings gone. I think it's the front passengers side" and sure enough when you go out for a quick test with the customer it sounds like the front passengers side and yet once its up on the ramp there's nothing wrong with the passenger front and the rear one's wobbling around like jelly"

Your ways not wrong though and more often than not the driver will hear it waaaaay before the wheel falling off stage as you said but your claim it's impossible to diagnose a wheel bearing by jacking up is wrong.
