how much disposable income and savings. want to accept dream job but halves free mone

I have had an interview for my dream job but if im offered it, it will half my free money. Atm i have £900 spare, £350 straight to savings, and any extra left at end of month. This new job would leave £500 for savings and 'free money' largely because of commuting costs. I dont know if its worth it??

  • How far off your dream job is your current work?

Your talking about a fair increase in commuting costs so does that mean a longer distance or just a more expensive route? How will the work/life balance be if it is a longer commute?

What are the savings there for? How close are you to target?
  • If it's your dream job, money shouldn't be matter. You only can progress when you have experiences on your CV.
You will only fail to learn if you do not learn from failing.

  • Atm i have a 10min commute by car, the new job involves train and underground season ticket at 5k and about an hour each way. Not too fussed about commute as i can happily read a book. Just trying to find a way to work out how it may impact on my budgeting. I have 3x month salary in savings for emergencies but thats it. I dont want to give up on holidays etc
  • My current job is nothing like dream job, but pays well and is 10min away

Is there any chance of negotiating your pay to help with your new commuting costs? Guess it depends how much your new employer wants you.

Have you actually done this type of commuting before? Do you know how your train/ tube is at rush hour? Are the trains frequent?

My commute in theory is a 50 minute train journey and a 5 minute underground. In reality its 1hr45 in the morning and 2hrs in the evening and that assumes everything is running properly. Normally its the 2nd or 3rd tube before you can get on. My trains are only every 30 minutes so miss one and its a wait. Train home will be standing room only from about 10 minutes before it leaves and so you have to get there earlier for a seat or stand 30 minutes

If things go wrong then the sky's the limit on how long it will take you to get home. Have had to stay in London a couple of times when it was do that or spend £150+ on a taxi

Personally the commute doesnt bother me, find it awkward to read standing/ when its packed etc, but know a few guys who have canned their jobs because the commute was too much for them
  • Yeah i have done it before, and like you there were days i was stuck and had to find alternative routes home which was a nightmare but goes hand in hand with commuting. I can bare that for the right job. I can try to negotiate but this is a highly competitive position and chances are there are equally qualified people that will snatch the salary. My happiness is worth alot. But im scared of swapping job worries for financial ones. As selfish as it sounds i havent had to worry about money for 3+ years and although happy to reign in the spending dont want sleepless nights over it
  • Could you move nearer the new job? I appreciate you said the dreaded word "tube" so the cost of living nearer London might be much higher...
  • No way i could afford it, only brought my first house 2yr ago and other half job to think of
