Oh dear, I'm ditching Sungold this year for Sweet Million and for the same reason that Sungold always seem to split when picked. Maybe I had better throw in a couple of gardeners delight too. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

I usually grow 2 or three varieties after trying 15-20 over the last 10 years or so.
Last year I grew Moneymaker (good reliable crop) along with a small plum tomato called Red Pear and green zebra. The red pear was the sweetest tasting tomato I have grown and I must admit, I ate most of them while pottering in the greenhouse. (the salt pot isnt just for slugs you know).
Not sure what Ill try this year but definitely more red pear.
(is it a guilty treat if its a vegetable (or fruit for the pedantic amongst us))0 -
I like:
Harzfeur (seed from Lidl)
Golden Sunrise
Sungold
Gardeners Delight
Ferline
I have blacklisted Moneymaker (too late) and Sub Arctic Plenty, which are supposed to be really early, but produce weak plants and a very poor crop.0 -
We have experimented with a few over the years.
Tried and growing again this year:
Black Russian- standard size excellent flavour, says indoors but ours do well in a sunny south facing spot.
Strillo - long skeins of cherry sized toms - cropped well last year.
Moneymaker - good all round toms IMHO
Trying this year
Tigerella
Red Pear0 -
Well to carry this thread forward.
Planted G.D /Money maker/ Sweetie/Blush/ Roma in a couple of windowsill propagators, ten days ago . All seem to have started well.
Today, taking a huge gamble. Started off , more GD and Moneymaker outside in a cold greenhouse. May well lose them, but seeds are fairly cheap. Won't risk the Blush.also sowed some Garden Pearls and Red Cherry last years pkts.
Ps if they all survive ,will be selling tomato plants at very reasonable rates.0 -
I thinned out my seedlings yesterday, i've 12 Ailsa Craig and 12 San Marzano on the go. I'll be starting off some Black Russian soon
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
Could I ask if it is possible, or indeed beneficial, to feed the indoor reared seedlings with for instance, Miracle Gro, in the weeks before they go outside, into, in my case Grow bags?
I appreciate that tomorite feed is some months down the line!
At the mo' I feel that this is the most robust looking crop I have managed by this time of the year, growing from last years tomato seeds, dried onto kitchen towel.
It seems that dragging them out of the airing cupboard, just as soon as they popped up, has stopped them from being as "Leggy", as in previous years.0 -
I don't bother, as for 'leggy' I get them out to the green house staging as fast as possible.0

Thanks for you comment wallbash.
I don't have a green house, so that does mean they have to live indoors longer I guess.0 -
Something like the first one on this page, I think:
http://www.realseeds.co.uk/tomatoes_bush.html
I've been growing the early ancestors of this one for some years. The taste is OK, but it is untidy, and it gets ugly and diseased-looking later in the season, (though it's not blight) so I destroy mine once others come along.
I do these in relatively small pots, because they're not going to get large, just fill-in till others take over.
Trying those-Latah myself for some early toms.
