Random amounts deposited into my bank account

Hi all,

Could do with some help please!!

15 deposits were made into my account on the 09/01/15 all of very random amount and all with the same reference of:

BANK GIRO CREDIT REF A073FO000012NSRA, RA 1300002031506

I have no idea what they are for and came to a total of £939.61
Called the bank and they said it's nothing to do with them and let it be. But conscience is getting the better of me and I feel the need to find the owner before I spend it all!!

Would really appreciate any help!

Don't spend it. You know it isn't yours, so to spend it would be theft.

At the very least the bank will probably ask for it back, and if you have spent it you'll have a problem.

Contact your bank again. If they won't do anything then ask to make a complaint, and ensure you get a complaint reference number. This will protect you if anyone later suggest that you were being dishonest somehow.

If they won't reverse the credit and you are concerned, move the money to a separate account and leave it there. This will stop any temptation to spend it.

  • I would write to the bank, something like this:

    Dear Sirs,
re: Sort code 11-22-33, Account 12341234

Having looked at my online banking, I notice 15 transactions dated 9th January which I do not recall making, crediting my account with £939.61.

I shall be grateful if you will provide me with a copy of information relating to these credits, such as where the credits were made, the paying-in slip(s) used, copies of any cheques paid in, and so on.

Additionally, I shall be grateful if you will also confirm that you are satisfied that this money has been credited to my account correctly, and that it will not be clawed back from my account at a later date.

    Regards,

    bgf

    - Once you've got it in writing that they're not going to take it back, you're pretty safe. Alternatively, if they say they might take it back, write again asking why.

Premium Bonds? Unlikely, as they don't do odd amounts.

    Some lottery? very possible

Dividend payments? Also very possible. Or interest payments.
  • Have you made any claims for PPI?
  • I found this that looks similar..

The OP later suggested it was a tax rebate.

If the total is £939.61, it cannot all be Premium Bond wins as they are all full pounds. Also, PB wins all have different references, not the same as you said yours have.

Can't be premium bonds for the reasons cited above. And it was too early in the month too. (Who on earth told you it was premium bond win and do you even own any??)

It's definitely not save for you to use the money, you know it's not yours.

Contact your bank again. Ask them to locate copies of the bank giro credits (ask for a copy).

    Not true.

If money has been credited to your account and it isn't yours, a statement from the bank saying it is yours doesn't make it so.

If you take the money and spend it, the bank will want it back and will sue if necessary. If you make a 'reasonable offer' to repay (having spent the money) then the courts will deem that good enough. A reasonable offer is normally £10 a week or so and is related to your ability to pay, not to the size of the debt.

I would pay down debt with it or put it into a savings account. Any interest you save/earn is yours but eventually you will have to give the money back.

Buying Premium Bonds would be quite a good thing to do with the money. You might get a win and you can simply sell and repay. The temptation to spend is probably less too.

Premium bonds come in as a Bank Giro Credit and then a reference which is..
A row of numbers followed by a letter and another single number then NS PBZ.
Each of the references are different as already stated.
    So they ain't PB wins....
