Wow - just looking through my statements for British Gas electricity and this time last year I was paying £16 per month, I am now paying £36 per month for the same amount of electricity approx. 450kWh per quarter.

Perhaps you should consider changing suppliersNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

450kw is about 70 quid inc vat0

Was that £16/month a fixed amount for the year? It's common for suppliers to fix your payments for a year, based on an estimate of what you will be using.
If you actually used more than that, then by the end of the year, you will be left owing them money. Not only have to they have to increase your payments to match what you are actually using, but they then have to add more on top to pay back the debt.
The end result is that you see a massive increase in bills, even though nothing has changed. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Your tariff must be really expensive. You should switch. I use an average of 866KWh per quarter and only pay £32/month
16p daily standing charge and 11.5p/unit0 -
The likelyhood is that you are in arrears with the electricity as it is very unlikely that £16 per month would have covered your usage and standard charge.
Just because your DD has increased so much does not meant the price has increased at all so the thread title is misleading. Look at past bills to see the price per unit that you are paying and compare it to your latest bill - they will be very close to each other.
Swipe - If you do a quick calculation it would appear that you are not paying enough on your DD to cover the cost of electricity and standing charge and so are building up a debt (if your figures are correct).0 -
What your DD is set to per month has nothing to do with the rate per kWh that you are paying. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Yep, my mistake, I use 2600 units per year. I divided by 3 instead of 40
