They are already annoyed at so many of the family not going out there, but I think they have to accept that.

I honestly think it is going to be just the parents going at this rate!

I must be on a different planet. to me a family wedding is one of the most important events in a families life. and to have this in a different country and for the children to meet extended members of the family is an experience not to be missed.

Don't think there's much chance of the children meeting the extended family.

Have you asked your DD's father if he's ok with the kids going? He'll have to write a letter saying he's allowing them out the country as sometimes, security won't let you through as you could be "abducting" the kids.

Gosh and to think of all the many times I took my son abroad ........and his father my ex husband did too ......not to mention the many people I sent on holiday through work .........and none of us were ever stopped !!!

Either you are scaremongering ...... or if speaking from personal experience you must look very dodgy .

Do you seriously think the airports have the time or inclination to stop every single parent travelling on holiday with their kids. What utter rubbish !!

No-one is stopped without good reason like an all ports alert or some very dodgy body language !

My parents got questioned when they took my daughter abroad, but they didn't get stopped. I'd written a letter with copies of birth certs just in case.

But then my mum has an American passport, my dad an Irish passport and my daughter an English one. And there was the different surnames thing.

As far as I know, there is no extended family, well none that they couldn't meet over here anyways. None of my cousins are going as they can't afford it, and have asked if there is going to be a party over here afterwards.

Have you checked your council's website? It's definitely £60 per day per parent for each child here.

Added: Just double-checked and the £60 is per block of absence, not per day.

I've tried looking and can't find anything about it. We live in Hertfordshire if anyone knows the answer.

I just don't see how they can charge their dad. He will receive the fine (not that the council or school have his address) and just go, "I didn't know they were taken out of school, I don't live with them." Which in my view is fair enough! It'd be different if we were together, although even then I think that it's a bit silly charging per parent.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I give my DD a letter every time my ex takes her abroad. I give it to her, not to him, as it looks a bit weird, although the PWC I believe should in theory give the NRP their agreement if the holiday is over a certain number of weeks (or may be different now - I'm not suggesting it makes sense I just remember that being the case).

She has needed the letter quite a lot, I think three times. In fact, I had a phone call in the airport once as I was waiting for her to return! I give a letter with anyone she goes away with.

Also my DD went on hols with her friend in the summer. Two adults and two teens all with different surnames and a letter was needed then too, which I had provided.

Strangely they seem to look at surnames which seems a bit pointless - that's one reason I didn't revert to my maiden name after I divorced, so that I had the same surname as DD on passport.

All a bit hit and miss.
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door
  • You might find you get it authorised by the school. A friend of mine was telling me when another parent was filling out the form the receptionist kept asking if it was for a family wedding, putting great emphasis on 'family wedding'. She didn't get the clue at the time but realised later she was trying to give her a big hint that a family wedding would likely be authorised by the head.

    Is this is -
    http://www.thegrid.org.uk/info/welfare/attendance.shtml
    Education Penalty Notices.

There also should be information on the individual school's website.

They won't if you're not together, don't worry about that.

Has she ever needed it to leave the country?

In all the times we have travelled with my own children with a different surname to me, or other people's children, we have only ever been questioned coming back into the UK, only once have we been asked for a letter, that was for my daughters friend. With my children they've only ever been asked general questions, like 'where's daddy' or 'are you with both your parents' or 'where have you been', particularly with my children with a Portuguese surname, I think they just wanted to make sure they were English.

I haven't heard anyone yet who has been asked for a letter when leaving the UK.
