The joy of BT

So, on the 17th December we moved into a brand new house. The last one of five remaining to be completed on a very small new build estate.
After being with VM (and its many previous guises right back to Birmingham Cable/Telewest) I had to move as VM do not serve the area.
Thus I called BT to find out what BB I could get and was informed that it would be a maximum speed of 17mb as they could not confirm Infinity was available. I knew for a fact other households within 30 metres of me had it.
Open Reach came installed a phone line and basic broadband. The engineer telling me he was sure I could have Infinity.
I got Xmas & New Year out the way, then did some checks and found (surprise! surprise!) that Infinity was available.
However, I am of course now an existing BT customer so had to sign up to an 18 month contract and was unable to take advantage of the Sainsbury voucher offer.
Now call me cynical but I can't help thinking BT are fully aware of these situations and get people on board with the basic BB before enabling them to then upgrade.

We had the same, but the other way around - signed up for FTTC, and then upon installation was told it wasn't available and that we're stuck with 6.5Mb ADSL.
It's a bit of a comedown from the 76Mb I was on at my previous property!
