Second hand Honda CR-V buying tips

I'm looking in purchasing a Honda CR-V 2002 to 2006 petrol model. Think I should be able to get a 120000 mile one for around £3000. I would like ask for some tips on what to check and look out for.

Also on Hondas, how does one check for parasitic battery drains, and are they common on this model? The last CR-V I looked at had this issue, so have to ask.

Is it worth getting an obdII checker like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAUNCH-X431-CRP129-CREADER-VIII-OBDII-Code-Reader-Auto-Car-Diagnostic-Tool-/181472976139?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a40a1dd0b

Thanks

If the last one had a battery drain and you spotted that. Then you know howto spot the next one wont you?

Fit a new battery and when you come back its dead its got a battery drain. Otherwise you need tools and equipment to check it.
You need to disconnect the battery and isolate circuits. Unlikely a seller will let you do that.

£150 OBDII reader from China... No its not worth it. Get a £40 one.

After purchasing it on ebay about 2 years ago, the owner came up with a list of problems which made the car unroadworthy, and this was one of the problems. Yes I know the symptoms, and I know it it multiplex wiring, and could be a pig to fix, but unsure if it is common, and other common issues, and problem areas to look at with this model. I am not in the trade :)

Or buy a £10 Bluetooth reader and the excellent £2.49 Torque Pro for Android.

Or if you're an iPhone user, buy something else since Apple can't implement Bluetooth to a standard properly.

I have a £10 one but assumed the OP to be old and retired to want a CRV :). So they wouldnt know what bluetooth was :)

    Steps to buying a CRV.

    Retire, Give up on life.
Get a yappy terrier and pretend its a new baby.
Reject the Honda Jazz and being too trendy.

    ?

A bit away from retiring yet, but do not like breaking down, and love reliability, maintenance cheapness, and no stress. I did see a Lexus RX300 for sale for £4500, but it will live outside, and bieng MSE a £2000 to £3000 banger should be more than adequate to visit the odd friend, do the groceries. and pick up the terriers.

I chose that OBDII because it did ABS and air bags, which to Bluetooth ones I believe don't do.

I have a box that will read the ABS etc and it costs under £15. But its not handheld. You need a laptop.

Basic OBD readers should read the codes stored for ABS etc, But wont be able to access them directly and interrogate the sensors.

Your unlikely to need that anyway unless you are willing to delve into the ECU's.

  • Pretty bomb proof cars,

check it idles ok and smoothly (not lumpy), new idle control valve is near £500.

Put it on full lock in a carpark and check for noise from the diff if you can hear a rumbling noise the diff oil needs changing, not a big job but oil is expensive

Check air con comes on and blows cold

    Otherwise its just normal checks

For such a fan, your grasp of the brand name is remarkably poor.

I guess you could blame the autocorrect on your "Iphone" or "Imac".

It's actually quite hard to get that wrong on an Android device. How iRonic.
