Bank shortfall- help!

Hi,
I'm new to this but my complete outrage with Halifax bank has driven me to seek further help.

Last weekend I went to a local branch to withdraw £2500. (I do this this quite regularly). The cashier counted out £2500 in used twenty pounds notes, handed me a sealed envelope then looked into a query I had with my other debit card, then I left the branch.

The money wasn't needed till Monday so when I got home I left the sealed envelope on the mantelpiece. My husband opened the envelope on Monday morning to discover only £1500!!!!!!!!

I have been on the phone for days! I have escalated my complaint but the bank won't do anything. I have had £2500 taken from my account but only received £1500. They have checked the till in question and everything adds up so I am left with the conclusion that the cashier may have taken £1000. I have asked them to show me CCTV footage of the cashier putting all the money in the envelope but they don't have CCTV on their cashiers. I have been told that I should have paid more attention, should have checked the money and because I left the branch it is my fault! When I suggested that maybe the cashier took the money the lady from the complaint department said that I would have seen if she had taken the money and "£1000 isn't worth someone losing their job"!!!!

I will be writing to the Ombudsmen but Im left so frustrated and powerless against this huge company. Is there anything else I can do?

Yes, you can ask your husband what he's done with the money as he must have taken it when he opened the envelope.

If you seriously expect us to believe that the cashier gave you £1000 less than you asked for, without you noticing, then you're deluded.

Copy in the Magic Circle, because anyone who can make exactly 50 out of 125 used notes (around 10mm in thickness?) disappear from under your nose is in the wrong job!
  • That's a serious accusation you are making, so obviously they would check CCTV.

You saw them count the money? Do you really then think someone will try do a magic trick and risk everything for the sake of a measly 1k (I say that because in the great grand scheme of thing, it is).

As someone as said, look closer to home.

Maybe the OP should have finished his post with "...Well ladies and gentlemen, you''ve been a lovely audience. I'm here all week" as he's obviously a comedian or a village idiot.

Hang up straight away, otherwise your phone charges will go through the roof if they haven't done so already.

if this is true - and I have no reason to doubt it, as you told us - then the money can only have been taken by you, your husband, or anyone else that was in your house on Saturday or Sunday.

ETA - if it had been the bank's error, I do not understand how somebody who does this regularly - your words - failed to notice that the envelope was about 1 cm thinner and almost half the weight than it should have been.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Put yourself in the position of a cashier wanting to defraud the bank - would it not be much easier to steal from behind the scenes rather than in full view of a customer.
